PUBLIC GOLF LINKS

ON THE TOWN B£LT

COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER THE QUESTION.

■ A public meeting called .by the Mayor (Mr M. McLaren ) and Councillor Caraeiion was held last evening to consider ;lne question of utilising some portion .or the Town Belt for golfing purposes, 'mo Mayor presided. Mr McLaren said he had been approached by quite a number of people ■in connection with the establishment of municipal golf links. Ho thought it desirable that they should have some golf links in the city of Wellington, mere were such links at Edinburgh, Llasgow, London, Manchester and orner places. Ho hoped they would be dole to get down to business and follow suit. He suggested the setting up of an organising committee, and from taat stop they could go on and secure a proper site. Ho thought they, could provide on the Town Belt one small course and on© large one. Dr Cameron emphasised the. healthy influence of the game. They had considered two kinds of courses—the sporting course and the match course. He preferred that a municipal course should be a sporting course. To have two courses would bo a littlo difficult to finance right away, but it should he kept in view. Underneath Brooklyn would bo an ideal site for a small course for beginners, but it was not the easiest portion of the belt to lay out. Ho suggested a course for an eighthole links. , The council would give the golfers reasonable assistance. He did not think , the subscriptions would amount to more than a guinea a year. Auckland, he had heard, was to have a public course at Cornwall Park. He moved that the meeting affirm the need of establishing municipal golf courses.

■ Mr Bothenberg pointed out that tho proximity of the course to the city would not mean a saving of expense. The "cost of travelling to and fro to tho links was, comparatively, too insignificant to notice. The expense was in the clubs and the balls.

Mr L. McKenzie said if they established a municipal course he took it they intended to'charge. He doubted if they could charge on the. Town Belt. The motion was carried.

On the motion of tho Mayor it was decided that: those present who were able to act constitute' an organising committee with power to add to thejr number to forward the proposal. ‘ , It was decided: that; the: resolutions be forwarded to'the City Council with., a roquet that the council afford the ,organis»hg committee financial and. other assistance .in regard to the work." Mr J. Mcßeah was elected secretary W tho committee. 1 .
