EDUCATION MATTERS

WELLINGTON BOARD MEETING. The Education Board’s monthly meeting yesterday was attended by .Messrs It. Lee (chairman.), A. W. Hogg, J. Kobbell, 11. Freeman, W. A, Allan, J, G. W. Aitkon, and W. 11. Field. DEPARTMENTAL. The department notified a grtnt of ilLifO for the erection of an infant department of the Training College in brick, and for the preparation of ground, fencing, otc. A sum of £2OOO was granted by the department for tho proposed now school at Borhampore. Tho department intimated tlat its previous refusal of a grant for a building at Silverstrcam was adhered, to. Application should bo made for increased accommodation at Upper Hutt. Tho board resolved to make application accordingly. MILITARY DUTIES. Major-General Godley requested that Inspector Charters bo permitted to retain command of tho second battalion (East Coast) and to attend annual camp. Sir Allan, whilst sympathising with the Territorial movement, said' iheir inspector's time was now already fully occupied, and he failed to see how tho requisite time-off for this work could bo made to fit in, especially the eight days’ camp. The chairman thought that the general’s request was rather a compliment to Mr Charters. These military services were more or less interwoven with their educational system, and many of the schoolmasters wore officers. It seemtU to him that unless there were actual hindrance to work it was rather desirable that these services should be encouraged. Tho matter was left iu the hands of the chairman, chief inspector, and secretary. WORKS COMMITTEE. On the recommendation of the committee tho following works were authorised: —Taita, concrete floors, rehanging windows, etc.; Kaitara, windows, papering, fireplace, etc.; Kaiwaiwai, fencing, pump; To Aro, sump and drainage, main school; Normandale, fencing repairs; Tokomaru, shifting basins; Cross Creek, grant for further improvements, ip consideration of good work done by committee; Brooklyn, subsidy on improvements and half cost of dividing fence; South Wellington, subsidy, asphalting, etc.; Mangaone, tan is and stands, residence and school; Clarevillo, water meter and repairs; Karori, subsidy, concrete fence; Korora, half cost ground improvements; Shannon, repairs; Kilbiraio, tank, rubbish destructor; Pukotoi, breakwind and shifting door; Parkvale, pump; Pirinoa, water service, stand pipes and tap; Maranui, subsidy, half cost of fencing and hose up to; Khandallah, subsidy; Johnsonville, expenditure on Newlands site. Library subsidies ' approved—Featherston South, 10s; Maranui, £2 10s; Featherstou, lls 3d; Kaiwarra, £3. SITES AND GENERAL. . The works committee recommended: That tenders be invited for lease of the following sites for' seven and a-half years: Section 18, block XV., Makuri; section 27, block IX., Mangsbao. Pahiatua: Hedge encroaching on street, that tho attention of the headmaster be directed to the matter. Section IG, block V.-, Puketoi:' That the lessee bo requested to make immediate payment of aircars. That the following be declined: Hutt. offer for part of school site; Brooklyn, offer for lease of site. Hataitai site: That decision bo deferred pending visit.

Kaiwarra : That the letter of the head teacher regarding increasing difficulties of work at that school bo referred to tho | chairman and chief inspector for report. I Tho chairman said that tho teacher com- | plained that the noise from Cable and ■ Co.’s foundry was deafening. Tho school was an old one and the site was never worth much. That in a case of unreportod damage to a teacher’s iesi deuce,. the teacher concerned be required to pay the cost of repair, 15s. The recommendations were adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. . Tho Mastertuu Trust Lauds Trust, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for a donation of ATOO to tho Masrerron District High School, to complete furnishing of hall. The Southland Education Board suggested that combined action should bo taken by boards to reduce tho frequency of change amongst teachers.—Agreed to. Mauricevillo West Committee recommended that appointments should bo made on the basis of classification.—Tho board has already decided its policy in. legard to this matter on a letter from the Teachers’ Institute.

Feathorston South’s petition that tho building of additions proceed this year, was not acceded to. The chairman was appointed to represent the board at tho opening of tho now school at Plimmcrton on November Ist.
