NAPIER LETTER

October 25.

T!Ho Napier Savage Club held their final “ladies’ night” for this season in the Theatre Royal on Tuesday night. The weather was very wintry, but despite this a very large number assembled in the building, which was gaily decorated with green and yellow for the occasion. The concert programme was excellent, the instrumental section being especially well received. Songs were rendered by Messrs C. Prime, 6. C. Chetwin, A. Johnson, E. Anker, and Dr Harvey. Several glees were much appreciated. Mr E. J. Luks, in, his character representation of Margaret Cooper, was inimitable, and fairly brought down the house. The orchestra played some fine selections and the programme concluded with a playlet entitled “The World We Live In. Among the ladies present were noticed: —Mrs S. E. A very interesting event took place on Monday afternoon, when the opening ceremony and dedication of tho new Hnkarere school for Maori girls attracted a largo gathering of friend;) and. wellwishers. I'in* Bishop ot \i aiapu conducted tho service, and there wore alto present Bishop Williams, Canons Take, Maync and Eccles, Sir William Eussell. Archdeacon Euddock, and a number ot European and native clergy and laity. Tho building is a very imposing one, situated on one of tho prettiest sites in tho town, and is famous for the g«xi work it has accomplished among native girls. Tint to match; Mrs Bowen, navy coat and skirt, smart hat; Miss Braithwaite, black costume, black plumed hat. Mr and Mrs George Elliott (Auckland) are visting Napier. ... Mrs Alexander Williams and family (St. Lawrence) aro staying at the Masonic. Mrs Standish (Ashburton) is on a visit to Hawke's Bay. Mrs Arthur Gore returns from England at the end of this month. Mr and, Mrs McEao Peacock have gone to Christchurch for a holiday. . . Airs J. A. Asher left to-day on a visit to Invercargill. Sirs Gayford (Napier) and her daughter and eon-in-law, Mr and Mrs Vnlpy (Hastings), intend leaving at the end of November for Vancouver, where Mr Vnlpy purposes settling. On Wednesday evening a large gathering assembled in St. Paul's schoolroom for the purpose of making a presentation to tid Eev. J. A. Asher and Mrs Asher. Mr Asher has had. during his thirteen years here, several invitations to leave his Napier work for other places, all of which ho has refused. Quite recently he was called to return to his old congregation at Gore, but Hr Asher considers his work still lies in Napier. The presentations wore a handsome desk, study chair, and suifc-case, also a solid silver tea service and tray for Airs Asher. An excellent musical programme, including items by Airs Griffen, Alisses Dean. Phillips, and Messrs T. Parker, Eussell, Prime, Spademan, and. Wood, passed away an enjoyable evening.
