AT THE RACES

The frightful storm which swept over Wellington on Saturday quite spoilt everyone's pleasure at the races, and that it was not expected was evident from the number of people out, and also from the number of ladies who had ventured in feathered hats. As the storm raged with ever-increasing fury, the stand became more and more crowded, and the only amusement seamed to be watching the number of hats and umbrellas that wore blown across the lawn. Even the seats were blown over, so it was not to be wondered at that few' people would venture down. The temperature became quite Arctic, and the only comfortable people were those who wore fur coate. indeed, there were more furs to ho seen than even at the midwinter meeting. His Excellency the Governor and Lady Islington motored out just before lunch. Lady Islington, who left early afterwards, was wearing a black coat with white facings and a black hat. Miss Harcourt wore a long Coney seal coat, and a hat with bows of shaded pink ribbon; Mrs A. Duncan wr.s also wearing a long fur coat and a white hat with navy ribbon and ospreys; Mrs Abbott and Mira Rawson, both wore black hate with fur coats; Mrs Hamilton, full length sable coat and 'hat with vivid orange plume; Mrs W. Stead also wore a sable coat over her frock, and had a hat wreathed with pale blue marabout feathers; Mrs Harris, hat of black trimmed with white lace and green leaves, and a long squirrel coat over her cos tume; Mrs Tweed, violet cloth and hat with plume to match; -Miss Clement, seal coat and small seal hat; Mrs Hume, dark costume, and navy hat wreathed with purple and white stocks. „ Also present were: Mr and Mrs Vy.
