LAND DEAL “OFF”
REFORM METHODS OF HELPING
SETTLEMENT. Special to the “Times.” MASTERTON, October 27. Some weeae ago Mr A. J. Stonewigg offered his Poroporo property, near Maeterton, to the Government for closer settlement purposes. Yesterday Mr Stonewigg received word that the Government would only purchase 1700 acres of the 3000 acres av £l2 IQs per acre, and instead of paying cash the Government desired Mr Stonewigg to taka the value of the money out in 4 per cent, debentures. Mr Stonewigg has promptly declined what is considered a ridiculous offer. Ho could have sold the property to two buyers while it was under offer to the Government, but preferred to give the Government a chance to fulfil its election promise that they would assist closer settlement in the. district.
During the election the Ward Government was severely criticised for not promoting closer settlement in the Maaterton district, but political circles are now beginning to think that Maserton will receive no better treatment from Mr Massey. Even sum criers of the Government condemn the offer made in connection with the Poroporo estate.
