COOLING EGGS DURING INGUBAIION

Dear ‘'Grower," —The comments in a recent issue of the “Times" in connection. with the cooling of eggs during incubation certainly proves that injutxxuor managers have .stall something to loam in the production of chicks by artificial means, and Chat a longer than the accepted time for cooling if given would probably be of. advantage, but few are prepared to take the risk voluntarily. However, wo often I earn something of value from mistakes or an in-. voluntary departure from the orthodox. An experience that occurred.with a recent hatch under my core will serve to prove that the suspension of life in nicks duiing incubation is greater than is commonly supposed, and i-t would soem from the following that we prooabty err on the side of over caution in the matter of cooling eggs. Through a-n oversight Last month the contents of a 216 egg-machine were left out for over three hours, and when discovered were apparently stone cold. This was on the fourteenth day of incubation, and little hope waa entertained for the future of that hatch. The fears. were unfounded, for true to time pipping began at a great rate, and when beads were counted no less 44ia.ii 205 healthy chicks were in the trays, moVi-ng the best percentage yot recorded by that machine. I merely send this experience along to show the need that exists for some definite and convincing line of experimentation tinder Qia supervision, of & publio officer. —I am, etc.. W. J. EICHABD6. SCRATCHINGS

It is not the size, color, or breed of the hen that counts, says '‘The Observer." The high laying quality is duo to the machinery inside, and yon call it “strain.” Young chicks need lime for bonemaking, so keep plenty of shell grit before them. To sweeten a yard, fork the ground over, and plant with, quick-growing and strong feeding stuff. Rape is about the beet soil cleanser, and it will go well now. Kerosene and olive oil, equal parts, will cure scaly leg. Wash the leg with warm water and soap, then rub the mix* tupe in, every other day for a week or so. You will want plenty of green feed for the coming summer. Got to work now. Lucerne will bo right to go in now. Crushed wheat Is good for chicks, also plenty of finely-cut grass, and a feed' of earthworms every day. If the eggs are not fertile, supposing it isn't there already, give the birds e‘ j of litter to scratch in. _ If ths is there now, change the bird.
