LYELL MINE DISASTER
WORK IMPEDED BY GAS IN LOWER LEVELS.
HOBART, October 21. It is officially stated that sinco the extension of the fire at tho 700 feet level tho 850 feet and 1000 feet levels have become so filled with gas that it is impossible to work there without the greatest risk. Tho raising of tho bodies has, therefore, been . delayed until fans have been placed in the engine winze and main shaft to clear the workings of foul air and gas. These are now being put in place.
Firemen and assistant miners are unanimous in tho belief that the levels are unfit to he entered now, even with helmets.
A Royal Commission has been appointed to hold an inquiry immediately regarding the cause of tho fire. • COLLECTION AT CAULFIELD RACES. MELBOURNE, October 21. A collection in aid of the sufferers by the Lyell disaster was made in the grandstand at the Caulfield races on Saturday. It realised £l2O. MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY The following telegram has been sent to the secretary of tho Mount Lyell Miners' Onion by the Wellington Trades and Labor Council: "Accept deepest oympathy. Subscription lists already out to aid widows and orphans." The Wellington Tramways Tlnion also sent the following telegram: "Wellington Tramway Union extends its deepest sympathy to the relatives of the victims of the Mount Lyell disaster.”
