WORKERS SEND PROTEST TO THE MINISTER. PSS93., ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH. August o. FoP owing on the formation, at Lake Coleridge hydro-electric works, of a branch of the Canterbury General laborers’ Union, the following letter to the Minister for Public Works la being forwarded by the union:— "Lake Coleridge, "August Ist, 1912. “Hon Minister for Public Works, "Sir, —We. the undersigned men employed by Mr McWilliams on the construction of a, tunnel at Lake Coleridge, desire to bring under your notice the treatment we are receiving from our employer. Mr McWilliams. the contractor for the tunnel, runs a boardinghouse, and will not employ any man who will not board with him. He charges us 18s a week for food that is unht for human beings to live upon. Seldom do wo get any meat to eat: very often we only get dry bread for lunch while at work: butter and jam are luxuries that we sometimes get. Wo are lowered down n. shaft 200 feet deep to our work by «n----rertillcated enginedrivers. The of this engine is worn out and absolutely unsafe. and our lives are continuously in danger.— "Yours, etc.." (Signed by thirty-two men all employed in the tunnel).
