LATEST TELEGRAMS PBESS ASSOCIATION. A TRANSFER CANCELLED. AUCKLAND, August 3. Captain Stevc-ns. staff officer of the Junior Cadets, was transferred temporarily t<> the Defence Department. Replying to a protest, tho Minister for Defence informed Air Lang, M.P., that tho action had been taken because ol the tone of tho evidence given by Captain Stevens to tho Education Commission, which, in tho Minister s opinion, reflected seriously on General Godley. Subsequently the following telegram was received: "All previous orders cancelled. Stevens to remain in ihurgo Junior Cadets.” WARNING TO URCHARDISTS. WANGANUI, August 5. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning four orchardists wore charged with failing to spray trees, and were fined t2, with costs (7s). NEGLIGENT DRIVER FINED. AVOODVILLE, August 5. A man named Richard Stevens was to-day fined 40s, with costs 13s, for negligent driving. Ho drove over and hurt a child, and did not sfop'to see ■shut damage lie had done. LAKE WAKATIPU STEAMER. FATAL FALL FROM SCAFFOLDING HAMILTON, August 5. Late this afternoon a terrible accident occurred at tho water tower which tho F 1 rank to n Town Board is erecting on F’ra.nktou Hill. A young man, INeil Kennedy, was working with another under the floor of the tank, and in endeavouring to pass his mate Kennedy slipped from the scaffolding to tho basement, a distance of 76 feet. AATien admitted to tho hospital Kennedy was unconscious, and his injuries wero so serious that little hop© was entertained for his recovery. He died jt little later. LITTLE BOY KILLED. ASHBURTON, August 5. A nine-year-old boy named Edgar Healy, while going home from F’airfiold school with two companions, was struck on tho head by tho engine of the express train bound for Christchurch. He was removed to tho Ashburton hospital unconscious, where he died. METHYLATED SPIRITS CASE. TIMARU, August 5. An elderly man, cnarged with drunkenness, was remanded this morning for medical treatment. Ho bought a bottle of methylated spirits at Albury, drank the contents as he tramped along the road, and was picked up in a pitiable condition. INSURANCE AGENT’S DEATH. TIMARU, August 5. At tho inquest on Ivor Allan AVilson. Insurance canvasser, who was burned to death in his house on Friday evening by upsetting a kerosene lamp, evidence was given that ho had been subject to fits and the nature of tho burns indicated that he was in a fit at’ the limo. TIMARU HARBOUR EXTENSION. TIMARU, August 5. AA 7 hen tho steamer Rotorua was here the week before last persistent northeasterly (not a common direction here) caused some trouble in holding her to the wharf. An active newspaper discussion is going on for and ngainst adding 300 feet to tho eastern mole ns a remedy for such annoyance. The HarboAir Board has requested the engineer to prepare plans and estimtes lor such extension. AVHALERS DISCHARGE OIL. INVERCARGILL, August 5. The Norwegian whalers, Hobart and Campbell wero engaged at the Bluff to-day discharging the first consignment of whale oi l into the steamer Kaikoura. The vessels will return to the Btewart Island whaling grounds. THE MINISTERIAL VETO. DUNEDIN, August 5. The Railway Officers’ Institute today passed a resolution in favour of abolishing the Ministerial veto in appeal cases, and of retaining the D 3 classification.
