WIDOWS AND ORPHANS
ASSISTANCE NEEDED. CXo the Editor. "N.Z. Times’.") Sir,—Regarding the suggestion o£ your correspondent in Saturday’s issue, that tin. Orphans’ Club should organise a benefit foi the families of the two tramway conductors recently killed, it affords' me pleasure t, state that a member of the executive al last meeting brought up the matter, ant it was unanimously resolved to help the fund in some way, as it' was considered such a movement would have the warn, sympathy and support of every Orphan. Your correspondent has propounded an excellent scheme which, if it is .possible to carry out, should result in a very band some sum being raised for the Benefit of the widows and orphans. The first difficulty. however, is that the Town Hall is engaged from Monday, the 12th inst., bv the Arts Club for their big concert; and. secondly, the visiting Orphans from the northern and southern cities taking part in tno Orphans’ ladles’ night in the Town Hall on Saturday, the 10th Infant, are booked to return home on the Monday. If however, the Arts Olnb could possibb postpone their evening until a later date and allow the benefit concert to bo fixed foe that night, steps could be taken by tele graph to ascertain whether, the Auckland and Dunedin and other Orphans conld remain in Wellington over Monday and give their assistance to a most commendable object, which should command the sympathy and support of all classes of the community. No doubt the council may he able to gratuitously grant the use of the Town Hall for this object, and with the assistance of the tramway men, there is ro doubt that three thousand tickets conld be disposed of in a very short time, ana the house packed on the occasion. There is only a week to make arrangements for the entertainment, but the whole question will be finally decided at the committee meeting of the Wellington Orphans’ Club to be held at the Wellington Piano Cimoany’s offices on Monday at 5.10 p.m. If t can do anything to assist such a laudable object your correspondent can rest assured I shall be most happy to do all t can. It is a question, however, to be finally decided hv the committee of the Orphans’ Club. No doubt the Town Hall staff would ho good enough to help the movement if the proposed arrangements can bo made. —X am, etc., R. A. KEENAN. Sec. Wellington Orphans’ Club. CITY BAND HELPS.
