M.r Arthur Hobbs, aged thirty, was killed at Hawera last night. He was riding a motor-cycle when ho collided with a trap, death being instantaneous. was tho ICftwora agent for 13algaty and Co. Mr A. Bailey Mansfield, who arrived by tho Ulimaroa from Sydney last Wednesday. has boon engaged by the Department of Agriculture as Orchard Instructor. Ho comes from Doncaster and Croydon, tho most progressive fruitgrowing districts of Victoria. He has been associated with cold storage and cooperative marketing of fruit, and has done experimental work for tho Victorian Department of Agriculture. In Bellamy's Inst evening members of both branches of the Legislature partook of an oyster supper, upon the invitation of the Prime Minister, Hon, Sir Massey, and the Ministry. The Primf l Minister proposed tho health of tho Speaker. He congratulated Sir Arthur Guinness upon his recovery ot health during the recess. Sir Arthur fittingly acknowledged the kindly remarks. Tho health of Sir Joseph Ward was also proposed by the Prime Minister. He congratulated Sir Joseph upon lus improved appearance since relieved of tho cares of office. Sir Joseph Ward, in replying in equally happy terms, wished success to the Ministry whilst they remained in office. At the instance of Sir Joseph Ward, the Prime Minister's health was also honoured. The Hon. Mr Massey took the opportunity at this, the first social function of tho present Parliament, ot welcoming tho largo number of new members. Before dispersing Sir Joseph Ward extended an invitation to members to join him at a similar gathering next Friday evening. As there was a large party on “overflow" function took place in another room, whore the toast of "The Ministry*' was proposed by Mr Silas Spragg (Chief of ''Hansard" stall), and the Hon. p. M. B. Fisher responded. He expressed tho hope that this may he only one of many similar functions to ho held during the session..
PELORtTS JACK—The pilot fish of the French Pass has been successfully photographed at last. Postcards with a short description of the fish and giving an excellent picture of Jack’s dive are on sale at Sharland and Co.’s Photo Store, Lambton quay.
