SPECIAL MEETING- OF UNION.

A special meeting of the Wellington Hotel, Club, and .Restaurant Union was ’held in tiio 'l-rad&s lUi-ll lafit night. ... ~ ~, Letters were received from the Wanganui, Napier, and Palmerston North branches of the union notifying the appointment of Messrs A. Cross, F. Heathe. and W. P. Wright, as delegates to the annual conference of the Hotel Employees’ Federation, which opens in Dunedin on August 7th next. A ballot ot members was taken for two delegates to represent the main union at the conference. Messrs F. Wooller (trustee) and E. J- Carey (secretary), were elected. The secretary reported a complaint which had been made that a member nad worked contrary to the award provisions. It was decided to ask him to attend a special meeting of the committee and for an explanation, failing whion the rules of the union to be enforced. It was reported by the secretary that for the three months ending yesterday 51 male and 7 female workers had been admitted to the union, and that the contributions of members during that period totalled .£Bl. During the past week or two the executive had reported that negotiations had been carried on with the licensees of the city, with a view to an amicable settlement of future labor conditions, to supersede the award which expires at the end of the current month. A conference had been held, but mainly owing to several licensees not being represented, no settlement was arrived at. Within a week or two the union would formally file demands for a fresh award, to be heard before the Conciliation Council, n-n/l it was hoped that a settlement would be effected without reference to the Arbitration Court. It was decided to refer the matter of framing remits for the conference to a meeting of the executive to be held next week. From the chair it was explained that on and after Thursday next the provisions of the Shops and Offices Act in reference to the hours of labor would operate, and that the working hours would then be G2 for male workers and j<» for female workers, as against a general average of 05 hours under the provisions of the expiring award.
