A heavy swell yesterday resulted m further considerable strain to the Star ox Canada, and necessitated suspension ol operations in various directions. The special hatch which had been placed, on 2 hold to confine the water to the lower decks was burst upwards by tho force of the water from below, heavy beams being shattered. ABSENT FROM PARADE. DUNEDIN, July 25. William Mclntyre, aged 19 years, who was fined 10s for failing ■ to attend' a parade, appeared before the court this morning on a judgment summons. He pleaded inability to pay, but said he would not deny that ho might have said to his mother in a joke that he would sooner go to gaol than pay. He confessed to having a grudge against the service through not having obtained a prize due to him when a volunteer. Mclntyre announced that he would not pay the tine cheerfully. The magistrate ordered him to pay the sum in weekly instalments. Penalty fur default was fixed at twenty, four hours’ imprisonment. LOTTERY PROMOTER FINED. DANNEVTRKE, July 25. George William Wright, manager of the , Town . Hall Picture Company, was fined £2 and costs for promoting a lottery 15y disposing of real property by means of a ticket. Prizes were given to holders of tickets in a lucky seat, the competition winners being decided by ballot.

ESCAPED PRISONER CAUGHT. WANGANUI, July 25,

A prisoner named George Albert Wallingford-, who was awaiting trial for thefts from hotels, escaped from gaol, but was arrested five hours later in the house of Mr S. J. Gordon, manager of the Bank of Australasia, which he was burgling.

EXPERT NOT WANTED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 25.

At a meeting of the Addington branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants the following motion was carried unanimously:—“This branch is op posed to any proposal to import a socalled expert from abroad at a high salary to manage the New Zealand railways, and would urge upon the executive council the necessity for resisting, this proposal to the utmost if any attempt is made by those in authority to carry it into efiect." It was further resolved to communicate with all theo other branches throughout the Dominion, asking for their support.

A serious acicdent occurred on the tramway to-day, Alexander Kelly, a building contractor, when riding a motor cycle collided with a tramcar and was badly damageed. He lies at the hospital in a critical condition.

The electivee members of the South Island Railway Appeal Board havee given a decision in favour of Messrs G. Burnett (Dunedin) and J. Young (Christchurch), who appealed recently • against being superseded on the classification list, but tho chairman of the board (Mr Haselden) dissents from thefr finding. The finding will be forwarded to the Minister in the usual course.
