EMPHATIC DENIAL
RUGBY UNION AND AN AGREEMENT. REPUDIATION NEVER DISCUSSED. An emphatic denial was given by the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union last evening to statements that the union was desirous of repudiating its agreement with the Potono Borough Council regarding the playing of matches at Petone. Mr D. Weir said the feeling seemed to be spreading that the committee wished to break its engagement with the Petone Borough Council —or in other words was trying to get past an agreement. Tho committee had never thought of any question of breaking an agreement with the council. “We consider ourselves honorable meq, ’’he remarked, "and as far as we are concerned we are going to abide by the agreement, which is a good ono." The committee entered into tho agreement with its eyes open, and it was prepared to renew one on similar conditions. He moved that a deputation, consisting of Messrs E. O. Hales, W. Hardham, and W. Perry be sent to tho Petone council as soon as possible with a view to discussing a renewal for the term of a year, or years. Mr W. Hardham, "for tho life of him could not see where some writers got their opinions.” He agreed , with Mr Weir and thought that representatives of the committee should be sent to the Petone Borough Council to say that the union was perfectly prepared to stick to the agree'ment. Never once during the season had the matter of breaking the agreement been discussed by the committee. Mr Hales thought that every member of the committee was satisfied with the agreement. Even if they were not, they entered into the agreement and they were prepared to stick to it. . He regretted that anybody was trying to raise trouble between the union and the Petone Borough Council. Mr Weir’s motion was carried unanimously.
