WATERSIDE WORKERS
CEMENT CARGOES
The Wellington, Waterside Workers' Union has sent to: the shipping companies concerned copies of the resolution passed by delegates of tho_ Waterside Workers’ Union in conference assembled, Way 22nd,’1912, and finally drafted, and entered into as an agreement betweten the Nelson Portland Cement Company, New Zealand Portland Cement Company, Milbnrn Lime and Cement Company, Golden Bay Cement Company, and the Transport Workers’ Branch of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, on the question of the handling of cement. Imported cement from _ July Ist, 1913, is to be contained in zinc, tin, dr galvanised iron-lined casks. This, is with a view to suppressing the dust which arises from the hags when handled at the wharves. In order to avoid friction. the union, in an officio ' communication, requests shipowners and shipping agents to refuse, to accept as freight imported cement unless nacked in terms of the agreement entered into with the New Zealand mnnu facturers, as the waterside worker throughout ■ New Zealand are determined to comply with the compact' am' will refuse to, unload from, ships’ holds f oreitm cement unless packed as requested.
According to the representative of •> ■shipping firm, it is quite impossible te compel manufacturers abroad to pacl- - to the dictates .of one union or all the unions of any one country. The new regulation, if enforced, would entirely exclude all cement other than that, manufactured in Xew Zealand i'lom coming here.
