LONDON. July 23. The estate of the late Sir Edward Albert Sassoon has been sworn at ,£1,000,000. Replying to a' question in the House of Commons, the Right Hon.-T. W. Russell. Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture in Ireland, stated that a prosecution had been instituted against owners of cattle at Swords, north-east of Dublin, for not notifying the authorities of the outbreak of foot and month disease there.
The Secretary of State for the Colonies, in reply to Mr W. Clough, M.P., said he was unable to give the number of persons punished in New Zealand and Australia for refusing to carry out their military training.

Hie Excellency the Governor lord Chelmsford has presented Mr Shepherd with a silver medal from the King of Italy in recognition of his services during the earthquake at Messina in December, 1908. Shepherd was then a sailor on the steamer Drake, which was off Messina, and assisted to dig out of the ruins eighteen persons; “Mr Highden’s” horses landed from the Ulimnroa in good condition.
