RACING PERMITS
TROTTING DEPUTATION WAITS ON PREMIER. PW.SS ASSOCIATION.
PALMERSTON, July 22. As tho Premier passed through here to-day to Niftier, Mr D. Buickj M.P., introduced a deputation of members of the local Trotting Club.
Mr Fred Nathan, president, asked for a totalizator permit. Last year they managed to carry out successful mootings without a permit chiefly by donations, which cam© mainly from farmers; but they did not wish' to be dependent on donations, and as their object was to encourage tho breeding of horses ol a useful typo ho thought they, should he permitted'the help of the totalisator. There were no other trotting ‘ clubs within a wide radius, and the North Island had fewer trotting clubs than the South Island. Ho suggested that another day should be allowed, if necessary, taking it from a club that was better off, as‘was. "done in tho case of Rangitikoi. ii- ■ Mr W. McKenzie asked for, a permit for the Mima watu 1 Hunt Club.
Mr- Massey said that tho 250 day# allowed by statute could not bo exceeded except hy legislation. As a result of the Wellington conference a private Bill would bo introduced to increase the number of days and- treated as a ■ nonparty question. Being a policV question ho could not commit the Government to more than this.
