SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE

A Yneeting ot the board of control of tho New Zealand Sports Proiection League was neld in the league’s offices yesterday afternoon. The president. Sir George Clifford. Bart., occupied the chair. Tho chairman of tho board of control. Hon. H. D. Bell. K.C., wrote intimating that before receiving his appointment as Minister for Internal Affairs, he deemed it necessary to resign his position as a member of tho board. He wished the league all success, and regretted that lie was obviously compelled to sever his association with it. On tho motion of the chairman tho resignation was accepted with regret. A sun-committee was appointed to go Into the matter of proposed amendments to the constitution, and to report, after which the rules as amended will bo submitted to the branches for consideration. Xu reply to a communication from the Oamaru branch, suggesting that a donation be given to assist in the effort now beirig made by the Oamaru public to raise funds for tho purpose of forming a recreation ground, it was resolved to reply intimating that the board aro in thorough sympathy with tho project, but that they regret that funds are not available, the matter being one. however, for the local branch of the league to take in hand. AV'ith regard to a communication from the South Canterbury branch of the league. a which they drew attention to the fact that tho Government tax from their club for tho season totalled £783, which was a Heavy drag on the club’s resources, and ask’ng that the league assist in having the tax placed on a more equitable basis, the president stated that the Racing Conference was approaching the Minister of Internal Affairs on the subject, and the case would be strongly represented without the necessity ot the league’s intervention in the meantime A deputation was appo-'nted to wait upon the Atinister of Internal Affairs with re-sve-t to a reouest from the Te Aroha branch of the league, with regard to assistance dosmed in connection with tho promised add-'tion of now bowling rinks on the Te Aroha domain.
