NOTES AND COMMENTS
Somebody has questioned the holding of political meetings on Sundays. let ■'s remember the words of William Penn, the Quaker founder of Pennsylvania: "It is partly every man’s rePgion to see his own country well governed." - * * * m "Women, because of their eminent practicability, are bound to help in the solution of these problems; Formerly—any time during the last ten years—one constantly found in the local papers letters from heads of families bewailing the increased cost of living, blaming every-
•thing under the sun for putting up tin prices, but devoid of any practical sag Bastion for lowering them. A month formed woman’s organisation, he.% ever, is succcsMully attempting to cheapen everyday commodities by eliminating the middleman’s profits. When one small band of women can achieve something mi rely a united and determined organnation might achieve much. Prom a private letter from Invercargill to a fiiond in Wellington discussing the Housewives’ Union. « * • • • The Petono “Chronicle” snggests that Mr Mills should challenge Mr Wilford to a debate in I’etone, not Ben Adhem. The ‘‘Chronicle" is quite mistaken in supposing that Mr Mills desires debate with Ben Adhc-m. He merely ottered Ben Adhem an opportunity to submit any apologies which he might have in mind for bis unprovoked personal attack on Mr Mills. Yon can hardly call that a challenge for a debate. As to debating with Mr Wilford, the ‘‘Chronicle is quite mistaken. Tho only assertion Mr Mills has made concerning Mr M ‘ V?nl is that Mr Wilford is a “jolly good fellow.” Does tho “Chronicle mean to suggest that Mr Wilford would be 'w*!’ ing to dispxxto the proposition? and to maintain his dissent in public debater Wilford knows ho is a jolly good fellow and that is the end of it. When Mr Wdlfcrd himself shall discover his own position it will bo time enough then to discuss it on its merits. It if not at all impossible that Milford and Aims will be found together—that depends on Milford.
