The extremely heavy rains whicu have fallen on the Taieri Plain and on the high country at the back, right up to MGddlcmarch, since Wednesday, have resulted in a big rise in tho Taieri river, and present indications point to the likelihood of a serious flood on tho plain. The cowntall is the heaviest that has been experienced for four years, and largo quantities of surface water already cover a portion of the plain. Settlers on the low ground are busy removing their stock to higher country. Rain still continues, and since 5 o’clock to-night the river at Outram has risen eight feet, but the worst effects will not bo felt for another six or seven hours. At Middlemarch the river is a quarter of a mile wide, and has risen six inches between 10 and 11 to-night.
