GREAT FOREST FIRES
IN PACIFIC STATES SAWMILLS BURNED AND VILLAGES THREATENED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. NEW YORK, May 14. At Portland, Oregon, twenty-four square miles of timber was burned through forest fires. In the Oregon and Washington States many lumber mills have been destroyed. Several villages are threatened. There are large forces of firc-fighters at work. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HOMELESS. (Received May 15, 11 p.m.) OTTAWA, May 15. The dry weather has started numerous forest fires in tho western States and various x>arts of British Columbia. Many logging camps have been wiped out. Tho business section of the town of Seaside, eighteen miles south-west of Astoria, Oregon, was destroyed, and hundreds of people aro homeless. Tho total damage is set down at millions of dollars.
