The opening batsmen, Gregory (40) and Mayn© (22), continued tins morning, Buckonham and Mead having charge of tho bowling. Tho batsmen took tho score to tho century tor Rovcnty-fivo minutes’ batting, ana when tho board showed Kit the partnership ended, Gregory bemte easily caught by liuckenham off Douglas. Gregory’s runs wore made by line allround play, and included six 4s. Mayne was dismissed by a good ball from Douglas five runs later. Ho had hit seven 4’s. but gave an easy chauoe when 49. ~ A great stand between Macartney and Bardslcy then ensued, 362 runs being added for the third wicket. Iho batsmen quickly got going. Macartney gavo a chance at 72, and Bardsley one at 51, but they afterwards mastered the howling. Throo hundred was hoisted in 200 minutes, but tho next century only took forty minutes. Macartney was driving superbly and Bardsley pulling and cutting in great stylo. Macartney skied Carpenter at 172, but Freeman in tho long-field missed tho catch. Tho fifth century was knocked up in. forty-five minutes, but when ho had scored 208, and the total was at 501, Macartney’s brilliant innings v-as brought to a close by a well-judged catch by Freeman at long-on, off Russell.' His innings, lasting 205 minutes, was a magnificent all-round display, and included two 6’s and twenty-four 4’s. Ho gave only one chance, really too hard, and on retiring was loudly cheered.
