BOMB EXPLOSION
SEQUEL TO SENTENCE OF 30 YEARS. LIBRARY "WRECKED AND POLICE INJURED. NEW YORK, March 19. Judge Otto Rosalsky, the judge who (sentenced Mr. hcliift’s valet, Brandt, to 30 vear.s' imprisonment, received through the post last night a bomb which wrecked the librarv of his home and mangled both the hands of the dynamite inspector who opened it, and blew the detectives in a heap on the floor, but they were uninjured. . , The Judge started to open the parcel, which resembled a small Jewel box. “This looks like an infernal machine, he said. Thereupon he left the jiackage on the librarv table and. hurried with his wife into’the dining-room and telephoned fur the police. Several officers came, including Inspector Eagan. All gathered round the latter as he gently prodded the jiarcel with the point of a penknife. NATURE OF MECHANISM.
Inside was a piece of wood the size of a thimble attached to a strong wire spring. "Wrapped in tissue paper was a quantity of powdered sulphur. Beneath this’ was a small piece of iron pipe with dry batteries -at each end; surrounded by bits of iron and lead. Had the box been opened in the ordinary wry tho released spring would have connected the current, and the Judge would probably have been blown to pieces. The judge suggested to the inspector to remove the sinister-looking object to tho police headquarters, but Inspector Eagan said: “We have handled explosives for years, and know all about them.”
Just as the Judge was opening the library door an explosion shook the house from cellar to roof. It blew out all the library lights. . INSPECTOR BADLY HURT.
When the servants rushed in with candles the inspector and the police were on the floor. Eagan had lost two of his fingers, and his face was splashed with blood. Twenty-four bits of iron had lodged in the ceiling. The windows, and mirr .rors were.smashed. The pictures had fallen from the walls. , The attempted assassination is believed to be the work of friends of the "Black Hand” gang, several of whom Judge Rosalsky has recently sentenced to long terms of imprisonment.
