MIRAMAR BOROUGH

Tlh« Miramar Borough Council mot last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. Brodie) presiding. There were preeent—Councillors Telford, Bell, Bowie, Richards, and Stone. It was decided on tho recommendation of the water supply, drainage and tramways committee that Mr Mcstayer be instructed to prepare plans for the power station and that legal notice be given the city council of the borough's intention to take over the electric lighting in the district. The council is to be again approached regarding the running of tars over the borough lines with the borough supplying the power. The recreation grounds committee reported that it had met the directors, of Central Miramar, Ltd., in regard to the proposal that the council.should provide a recreation ground in lieu of street formation. The matter was fully discussed, and the directors of the company undertook to further consider the matter. The public works committee notified that Mr 0. E. Evans had been appointed foreman engineer. The borough engineer reported that the total length of the proposed pedestrian tunnel from Miramar tram terminus to Karaka Bay wharf would be 31 chains.' The cost of an un.li.ned tunnel, sft by 7ft, was estimated at £ISOO, and for a tunnel lined witb 14in brick the cost was estimated at £3540. In the lined tnnnel nearly double the amount of excavation would be necessary, but the advantage of lining would outweigh the cost. The cost of lighting the tunnel would be about £6O per annum. In this estimate £2OO had been allowed for the cost of taking land and for the cost of the easement of the tnnnel. The annual charge involved for interest, lighting and upkeep was estimated at £2BO per annum. The report was adopted.
