WORKERS’ HOMES
THE ISLAND BAY GROUP. Gu*ocl- progress is being made with the erection of houses at Islaud Bay under the Workers' Dwellings Act, 1910. This settlement is the first to be taken in hand under the scheme. All the prospective owners are manual workers. The dwellings rre mostly of four or live rooms, though thel*e is one of six rooms being- built for a large family. The cost of the five-roomed houses averages £350, live rooms £420, and the sixroomed dwelling means an outlay of £suu. The sections, 4offc by 100 ft, have cost, from £7O to £l3O, according to position. The houses are ..being erected under the eye of a competent overseer (ilr It. Bigg), who assured a “Times** reporter who visited the settlement yesterday with officials of the .Labour Department - that there is nothing jerry-built about any of tho houses. ” It's all plain stuff." he said, "but it's all good and absolutely reliable.*' The settlement will represent an outlay of about 1£12,000, of which nearly £IO,OOO will be tho cost *ot tho buildings. Though, the foundation stone of tho first house was only laid nine weeks ago, ten of the houses will be ready for occupation inside of a fortnight. The whole 1 tw.enty-tbree will be finished wel within the contract time.
