NOTES AMD COMMENTS

(By "The Judge.")

Evadno, the winner of the Nursery Handicap at Dannevirke yesterday, is a brown filly by King's Guest from Heavenly Twin, by Castor —Vivandiore, by Musket. She is thus a half-sister to Mr E. J. Watt’s gelding , Theodore. Evadno runs in the “cerise, green sleeves, and white cap" of Mr P. P. Neagle. Miss Augusta, who was just equal to pulling off the Trial Stakes at Dannevirko. is a four-year-old bay mare by that one-time smart sprinter Marshal Soult, from Lady Augusta. She has done very little racing, an unplaced performance in the Maiden Scurry at Poverty Bay representing her only contest last season. 1 , Those who saw Sea Queen run second in the Stewards’ and Autumn Handicaps at Wanganui last week were by no means surprised to find Mr Ellerton s mare winning the Dannevirke Cup. Kingan had Sequin’s daughter looking exceedingly well and it was just a question whether she would last out the extra two furlongs. Sea Queen is notoriously a bad mare at the barrier, but hot infrequently manages to get a flying start after disorganising the field. She runs best when m front and is possessed of plenty of pace, but staying a distance nas not hitherto been considered her forte. When at Wanganui last week J. Ayres told the writer that Merrivonia had been virtually in the doctor’s hands tor some time and certainly she was looking dull and lifeless when stripped for the Gup. It has been decided to treat the brown daughter of Merriwee and Livonia to a lengthy spell, which should do the mare a lot of good. Sheriff Muir, who finished third in the Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington on Tuesday! is a two-year-old chestnut colt by Wallace from the Auckland-bred mare Miss Delaval. who among other races won the Great Northern Derby, Northern Champagne Stakes, and A.R.C. Woloomo Stakes. She was sent to Australia in 1906.

Nominations for the autumn meeting of the Mastorton Racing Club close with Mr A. Hathaway, the secretary, at 9.30 this evening. Judging from the lengthy acceptance list the Napier Park meeting next week should provide some excellent racing and a big success should be scored. Nyland has been accepted for in the, Napier Cup; which; is run'over a mile and a quarter, and it will be interesting to note if ho is able to stay out the distance, which is longer than . races in which he has hitherto been seen to advantage.- There is no reason why the big brown horse should_ not do so and, as the Highden stable is in such form at present, the son of Finland is euro to be supported. The death occurred in England last month of Mr J. Mansell Richardson, who, in his day,' was a prominent amateur cross-country, rider. .Among other big events, ho won the LiverpoolGrand' National Steeplechase in _ successive years on Disturbance and Eeugny, both owned by Captain Machell. In Franco a very nice point has been decided under the Employers’ Liability Act in favour of the Steeplechase Society. One of their gatekeepers,' 'struggling, to keep out of a' rush, had his- finger crushed in the gate, and was compelled to have it amputated.' Ho sued the .society under the Act, . which would, or should, have entitled him to an annual pension of .£l2 had he been in the employ of an employer of .labour or company. The court decided that he was not entitled to claim, as the society could r.ot l>o assimilated to any commercial undertaking coming under the Act of 1306, since it had not been formed for the purpose of earning money for distribution ameng shareholders, and existed solely for the purpose of developing sport under the, control of the Minister of Agriculture and the Stud Committee. The plaintiff was nons 'itoi.

Tho Easter meeting on the Tauhercmkau course is a very jiopular fixture at Easter time and with fine weather is sure to prove a suooess. DANNRVIKKE MEETING I SEA QUEEN WINS THE CUP. TAM ANT WELTER WON BY KHAMSIN. nOK OUS BFEOIAI. BEFOBTIB. DANNEVIRKE, March 6. There was a large attendance' of sporting folk at Tamaki to-day for th© opening day of tho autumn meeting of th© Dannevirko Eacing Club. Tho fields, were considerably above th© average.. The success of the Wellington-owned mare Sea Queen was popularly received. Some heavy showers of rain fell during the afternoon. The big field of twenty-three horses lined up at the post for the Trial Stakes. Gray rushed Mies Augusta to the front, end getting a nice position the mare ran home a .winner ■ by a .head from Galtee, with Bp worth a neck away. Queen o’ Soots began smartly in. the Dannevirke Cup, and passing the stands the mare led from Sublime and Axiom. The cider was . the same going round the back, but ou entering the straight Queen o' Scots retired beaten, and. Golden loop and Miscnl became prominent. When (well in the running the latter looked -like winning, but McMullah, getting to work on Sea Queen, she ’ran home the easiest of winners by two lengths from • Cork, who; coming fast, beat Miscal by |half a length. During the progress of the race Loch Maben fell and Lorrigan got a severe shaking. - • . . Adare began very quickly, in the Taihoraiti 'Welter; but after going three furlongs he began to. tire, and" Mahi garoa entered tiie straight with a,' ! substantial lead, and never being after- ' wards troubled ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Happy New Year, who was a clear- length in front of Adare. Kingswoll was a good fourth. Master Kilcheran, who was a warm favourite for the .Nursery Handicap, with Peroneal, led into the straight. When within two hundred yards from the post Watson brought Evadno along the filly winning comfortably by three lengths from Peroneal, who was half a l length in front of Master Kilcheran. Daybreak was close up fourth. > Emma showed out momentarily at the start of the Electric Handicap, but soon drifted back and Thrave, who was always in a good position, lasted long enough to win comfortably by a length and a half from Makara. . W. Price moved Khamsin out smartly in the Tamaki Welter, and remaining in the front won comfortably by a clear length from Seatondale, with St. Toney a similar distance away. Por the Makirikiri Hack Handicap Easy and Avaunoe divided favour. Allurement was the first to begin, but gave up when the straight was reached. In the run to the post Avaunce held a slight advantage, winning by half a length, from Ladrone, with San Pluie a head away.
