HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL

The Horowhenua County Council mot on Saturday, Councillor ‘Verm (Shannon) presiding. A petition was received from several settlers near Buckley stream requesting that tlio County Council take action in direction of enforcang tho cleaning out ol tho Buckley stream so that the water would not be impeded as at present. \ Councillor Stephenson remarked that this was a special rating district. lie thought that final notice should be served on the person who was blocking the flow. Ho also thought that he and the county engineer should interview the Individual in question on the matter. He moved that m response to the request of the settlers a final notice be served on those settlers who have failed to clear out the stream running through their properties.—This was agreed 10. Tho olerk to the Makara County Council wrote acknowledging the council's letter with proposed amendments to the Hospital and Charitable Aid and Harbour Board Acts. After discussion at his council’s last meeting he was directed to comply with tho request, and ho now tfnggosted that it would bo advisable to bring these matters before the County Council Conference. as that body would have more weight than individual councils. From the Hawke’s Bay Couuty Council a letter was also received stating that the council liad decided to tako no action in tho matter. At the- same time they agreed with the desirability of the amendments proposed by the Horowhenua Council, but considered it quite impossible to get the amendment wished for.—The letters were received.

A local improvement was suggested, in a letter from Hanakau that weeds and rubbish should be cleared away on the footpath on. the county road in front of the whops. Councillor Skcrman moved that the road be cleared as suggested, and that horse rails be erected. —Agreed to. The Under-Secretary' for Public Works Department wrote thanking the council tor its letter advising that the -offer of the expenditure of the amount available for the Walkawa road should bo made to the Otaki Road Board. The council 'fixed the dog tax for the year ISI2 at 10s for house and sporting dogs, and 2s 6d for sheep and cattle dogs. The following resolution- was adopted:— That the rangers in tho employ of tne council bo offered the- dog tax collection In their respective districts,’ at tho remuneration of 5s for every 10s dog and 6d for every 2s Sd'dog registered by Kay Ist, provided that' 220 dogs are registered in tho Tokomaru riding, 240 in tho’Wirokino riding, and 350 in the Otaki and To IToro ridings by that date, progress payments to bo made on half the commission due each month, and that should any collector;fail to register' tho specified number by- Alay Ist hla remuneration be reduced 25 per cent. ~ ~ Tho council undertook to widen portion of tho North Manakau road_by four feet provided the Otaki Road Board_ agreed that a water-race bo allowed on the road, as ♦soon as consent was approved of. Ho proposed starting the water-races bn Monday-morn-ing. Tho McDonald rood would b© finished in a few davs. In the Te Horo riding he bad succeeded in getting men to strengthen tho towers of the Taungata bridge as rcouired bv the-Public, Works Department. Ho regretted to state that another slip had occurred at t.io blue bluff. Otaki Gorge 1 ' He was afraid it would take the whole of the revenue of the To Horo riding to maintain) a good road at tips place.
