ALLEGED GERMAN SPY
AN OFFICER ARRESTED AT PORTSMOUTH. ; By Telegranh—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, December 5. A German officer has teen arrested as a spy at Portsmouth. His name is Captain Heinrich Grosse. Ho was formally charged at the Portsmouth Police Court. Evidence was given to the effect that he had made elaborate inquiries as to the coal supplies; also as to the number of men in barracks. The police discovered a cipher letter among accused’s belongings. Accused was remanded, but bail was refused. THE SUSPECT'S STATEMENT. (Received December G, 10.10 p.m.) LONDON, December G. Captain Grosse, at the inquiry, stated that he wanted information for a book to enable German merchants to offer coal wherever there was . a shortage. He told a pensioner that he would possibly send the latter to" other seaports to complete the inquiries.
