THE FEDERAL TARIFF
DUTY ON NEW ZEALAND TIMBER RAISED.

In introducing the tariff amendments, Mr Tudor, Federal Minister for Trade and Customs, stated that beyond allowing the importation of New Zealand white .pine of certain sizes frpe there would be no alteration in the timber duties. He does, however, raise tho tariff on kauri by : the deletion of subitem B, item 303, which reads: “New Zealand pine, undressed, 6d per 100 superficial feet,” and the substitution of an item dealing only with white pine for butter-boxes. This throws other New Zealand pine among subitem D: Timber, undressed, 2s 6d per 100 ft.
Merchants have raised the prices of New Zealand timbers other than white pine as follows;-Half-inch a shilling per 100 superficial feet, five-eighths and three-quarter inch'cightpence, inch and over two shillings. ■
