A secret Consistory confirmed the elevation to the Cardinalate of Archbishop Bourne (of Westminster), Archbishop John M. Earley (of New York). Archbishop W. H. O’Connell (of Boston, U.S.A.), and twelve other dignitaries of the Church. Tbo appointments juat matfo will raue<v the number of Cardinals to Bixty-flvo. Tho number of mombors of tho .Sacred College W*V3 fixed by Sixtus V. in 1686 at seventy, and that number was only exceeded in 3872, when there were seventy-two mombors. The present number is larger than at any time am 00. that year. Cardinal Bourne is m hia fifty-first year, having been born at Clapham In March, 1861. He was educated at St. Outhbert'a College, XJsbawj St. Edmund’s. Ware; St. Sulpioo, Paris; and the University of Louvain. He was ordained priest in 1884, appointed rector of Sooth•wark Diocesan Seminary 1889, named Be mastic Prelate to Pope 100 XIII., 1895, appointed titular Bishop of Epipbania and. Coadjutor to the Bishop of Southwark 1896, Roman Catholic Bishop of Southwark, 1897-1903. and -Archbishop of 'TVcstanmetier since 1903. Cardinal Earley was bom in 1842 at Newton Hamilton, Armagh. Ireland. Ho became the fourth A rob bishop of New York In 1892. GardmiaJ O’Connell was bom in 1859 at Dowoll, Massachusetts and. haa boon ATOhhtshop of Boston since. 1907.
