DRAUGHT-HORSE STUDBOOK (To the Editor "N.Z. Times.”) Sir, —On my return home from Canterbury X find m your issue of , the Sth inst., a letter from Mr Dunlop. It is surely most unfortunate that the promoters of this Dunedin Clydesdale Stud-book should attempt to establish it upon misrepresentations regarding the existing Now Zealand Draught-horse Stud-book and matters pertaining thereto. Mr Dunlop, for himself and his fellow-sup-porters of the Dunedin book, disclaims any intention to disparage or cast odium upon the Canterbury. book. In answer to this I would merely quote the following from Mr Johnstone's inaugural speech, which apparently met with no adverse comment from "a largely attended meeting of breeders of Clydesdales'' held at_JDnnedin. Mi- Johnstone there stated tnat “ho could assure them that absolutely_no value whatever was attached to registration of Clydesdale horses in the Draught-horse Stud-book as it existed to-day, and that, so far as he was aware, there was absolutely no check on what went into that book.” Mr Dunlop may consider thaT neither "disparagement” or "odium" is the proper word to apply to this utterance, and iwssibly in this at least I can agree with him. I enclose a copy of the circular convening the meeting at Hastings referred [ to by Mr Dunlop. He and his master (Mr 'll. Short) attended that meeting, when ilr Dunlop’s chief cause of displea-

sure seemed to be his inability to express himself to the effect that horsedealers would fake pedigrees, if such pedigrees wore not recorded in the Dunedin Clydesdale Stud-book, and made subject, j, presume, to the searching scrutiny of Mr E. Short and Mr J. A. Johnstone. However, Mr Dunlop was saved from himself by being called to order by the chairman, who very properly objected to hear a section of the audience insulted. His statement that I moved the resolution at Hastings to support the Draughthorse Stud-book (managed by the Canterbury A. and P. Society) now in use is correct. But that “the same gentleman moved the motion at Palmerston” is a distortion of fact. The motion at Palmerston was much more ably moved by Mr H. N, Watson of that place, and was seconded by Mr Rhodes, of Waikato, ana carried.

Mr Dunlop is correct in stating that none of the horses under ray charge are entered in the N.Z.D.H. Stud-book. It was,' "mnvever, unnecessary for him to ✓efer to anj' volume of that book for this information, as I stated the fact when replying to his employer’s question; “What has become of the fees collected by the Canterbury society?” The Canterbury association has now re-formed its executive, and each'district in the Dominion has a representative upon the committee —Mr A. Alexander lor West Coast up to' New Pljunouth, Mr Rhodes for Auckland and the Waikato, and myself for Wairarapa, Poverty Bay, Wairoa and Hawke's Bay. It is suggested that each Metropolitan A. and 1C Society should collect all entries to the New Zealand Draught-horse Stud-book from its own district, and submit such entries to the scrutiny of a local committee, who, with theTTTocal knowledge, would bo able to vouch for the correctness of each entry before submitting same to the head office of the society in Christchurch. X now Beg of Mr Short and Mr Dunlop to meet us and lend us their assistance and experience in making the New Zealand Draught-horse Stud-book the best publication of the description "in tho_world.” We all know of the high position Air Short has taken with his Konmeys without being continually reminded ot it by himself and his servant. It was a great pleasure to examine the world’s chanij pion ram on view “for exhibition only at Palmerston show on the 2nd and 3rd inst., and when we reflect that_ that marked distinction was gained at the Argentine show, with such an astute and manifestly disinterested judge as Mr Devenport, of Canterbury, on the bench, the honour is enhanced. The first point I look for in a hock of sheep is family likeness, and even if X disagree with the type, I the breeder, as ho knows what ho wants. The three show rams on exhibition at Palmerston, being oi distinctly different types, it would nave lent added interest had there been a card on each pen stating who the owners I repeat that the Lincolns and Border Leicesfcers in the Old Country are exactly what I called them. When Mr William Wilson returned from his lust visit to England, ho informed me.that the Lincoln had got to a- state to bo no use to us here in the colony. Mr George Elliot, who returned a few days ago, confirms this statement. The Border Leicester is nearly as bad. Mr Elliot saw one ram in Scotland he thought might suit us. Mr T. S. Little and my brother, David, had great difficulty in getting. half a dozen specimens of the breed m bootland worth passage money to this Dominion, and that upon different years. The Clydesdale, hors© seemed to them equally unsuitable Tor' our requirements, and Mr Short endorsed the latter opinion in his letter of January 18th last to the Otago-9-Times.'■ • ' . . Any pedigrees I have received with imported animals (with one exception) have not been worth the paper they were Printed on to me, for the simple reason that I had never seen the ancestors. My pedigrees, which I carefully keep for my own information, are worth nothing to any other person not conversant with the different animals. The .exception is the thoroughbred horse, for there it is absolutely essential to breed from the speedy and stout-running Hues, and they appear in all colours and shapes. ; But, with the majority of our domestic animals conformation is indispensable. I again invite Mr Short and Mr Dunlop to come along and Jet us diseuss best to make this Now Zealand Drau ehthorse Stud-book popular. 1 am, etc., WALTER P- ARCHIBALD. Hastings, November 13th.
