Mr D’Arcy Irvine, Government stall surveyor, mot with a serious accident at French Pass on Thursday, sustaining a fracture of the skull through being struck by a falling tree. Ho was brought by launch to Nelson, and now lies in a grave condition in ‘the ho& pital. FARMER’S DEATH BY DROWN. ING. PRESS ASSOCIATION. MARTON, October 29. F. Sohwass, farmer, of Turokiaa Valley, was drowned in the Turakina' river on Saturday. He was driving aoross in a dray, wliich capsized. Hi* companion drifted to some overhanging willows, and was rescued. Tha horse was drowned. So far Schwass’* body has not been recovered. RAILWAY FOREMAN’S DEATH. SPECIAL TO THE “ TIMES.” PALMERSTON, October 21, The inquest as to the death of Mr James Ferguson Nelson, railway foreman, who was killed by tho collision of a train with a motor trolley, near Papatawa, on Thursday, was held before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., yesterday. Evidence was given by Frederick Charles Widdop, district engineer of railways, Wellington, who was with deceased at tho time of tho accidentj James Edward Lawson, engine-driver j and Frederick Fryer, fireman; and the coroner returned a verdict that deceased died from shock as the result of an accidental collision on the railway, no blame being attached to tho engine-driver or the fireman of tho train. DROWNED WHILE BATHING. SPECIAL TO THE “ TIMES.” PALMERSTON, October 29. Yesterday afternoon a drowning accident occurred in the Hangaona stream. Tho eight-year-old son of Mr A. H. Dufrosue, a well-known Palmerston bu : ldor and contractor, was paddling in tho stream with somo older boys, who left him for a while. When they returned they discovered him floating head downwards in deep water. He had evidently got out of his depth and faad no one to help him. The body has not yet been recovered.
