Tho report of the .Royal Commissioner appointed to inquire as to the suitability of New South V*'ales ores for; iron, and steel manufacture, tho cost of 1 production, and if tho Government s I arrangement with Messrs Hoskins, of tho J.ithgow "Works, is beneficial to tho Government, finds that in a number of instances serious irregularities have been committed in the carrying out of contracts. Tho Commissioner condemns tho laxity of tho Government officials and also tho present arrangement with Messrs Hoskins. Ho is satisfied that, given modern equipment, pig iron could bo produced in Australia at 54s a ton. He recommends that blast furnaces be constructed near tho seaboard. Tho Commissioner considers Messrs Hoskins are undertaking an impracticable task in attempting to manufacture steel rails under tho existing agreement with tho New South Males Government. He estimates that it would cost a million and a half to establish suitable iron, and steel works. As a result of tho report, Mr Burrow, tho Government testing officer at Messrs Hoskins’ works, has been’- suspended.
