It is not clear whether tho Insh railway strike will spread or collapse. Tho Karl of Aberdeen (Lord-Lieu-tenant) and Mr F. W. D. Mitchell, representing tho Board of Trade, are on. gaged in efforts to make peace. The War Office has sent to Dublin half tho railway corps from Aldershot to drive mail trains if necessary. Troops have been ordered to protect Thurles and Ballybropby. Five hundred Belfast railwaymen resolved to strike to-day. Tho directors minimise tho trouble, and declare that tho passenger service is unaffected. The Wexford branch of the Amalgamated Railway men’s Society unanimously condemned tho action of tho society’s executive in calling a general strike for Ireland instead of for the United Kingdom. Troops are guarding tho Cork tunnel at tho Limerick Junction. PREMIUM BONUS SYSTEM. CONDEMNED BY UNIONISTS. LONDON, September 24. Five thousand boilermakers unanimously voted for tho abolition of the premium bonus system. The engineering and shipbuilding trades on the North-East coast gave unanimous votes in tho same direction as did tho Combined Smiths, the United Coppersmiths, and the Birmingham Sheet Metalworkers. MOUNT LYELL STRIKE • OVER 2000 MEN IDLE. HOBART, September 25. The Mount Lyell smelters have been closed. There are over 2000 men idle. The Governor is personally endeavouring to effect a settlement. THE STRIKERS’ DEMANDS. (Received September 26, 0.15 a.m.) HOBART, September 25. The miners on strike at Mount Lyell demand increases of wages ranging from 25 to 50 per cent., which the management regard as absolutely prohibitive.
