WAIRAU RIVER
IMPROVEMENTS WANTED. A deputation from the Wairau Harbour Board interviewed tho Hon. J. A. Millar (Minister of Marine) yesterday to request that a grant should bo made to that body to carry out river improvements, tho matter having become more urgent owing to tho recent floods in Blenheim. Mr John Duncan, M.P., who introduced tho speakers, reminded the Minister of a promise formerly made by tho Government to assist in carrying out a practicable scheme of opening up the river mouth. The Minister replied that ho had not promised anything for drainage purposes. Ho thought the best method of securing relief from floods would be to open up the river mouth, and if this was done ho would lay the request for assistance before Cabinet with a favourable recommendation. Ho would grant Hie Harbour Board tho river foreshore as requested. Mr Millar advised the board to amalgamate with the River Board and extend its rating area.
