CLYDESDALE HORSE SOCIETY

FAVOURABLE RESOLUTION GABRIEL. A mooting of delegates from A. and P, AfisoaLafckmg and others interested met at Dunedin on Wednesday for the purpose of discussing the formation of ■x Clydesdale Ilorso Society for the Dominion. When the suggestion was hret mooted some months ago a number of brooders expressed the opinion that the proposal was premature, and that no definite decision should be made until the matter had been thoroughly discussed by tho various agricultural associations so that all objections might be ventilated, especially by North Island breeders. Mr Johnston, who presided over the mooting, remarked (says tho special correspondent of tho Christchurch "Press'’'’) that ho regretted that the Canterbury A. and P. Society was holding aloof from tho movement. This , society considered that tho Draught Horso Stud Book published by it was sUlhcient for uoods, &nd saw no need for creating a separate society and stud book in the interests of any one distinct breed of horse. That view was, he felt sure, not shared by srtud masters generally either in tho Dominion or Clydesdale Hors© Society cam© into being, and if registration in it was to come th© hall-mark of tho breed, the most scrupulous car© would > have to bo exercised in tho consideration of entries, so that tho excellence aud purity of the breed might be would be necessary to give th© editing committee some latitude at first. It might bo found in some instances at the outset that. owing to there having been no proper system of registration of pedigrees, some were not as complete as the regulations might require. The committee should have power to relax tho conditions, say during the first year, if after careful investigations of 4 the pedigree and inspection of the animal in question, they were satisfied the breeding aud conformation were right. He announced that considerable financial support had been offered, and that he thought the sum of five or six. hundred pounds would bo a sufficient fund as a basis. , , Mr G. Thomson, moved that a Clydcedalo Horse Society with a stud book be formed, and Mr E. Short, as an amendment. moved that a Clydesdale Horse Society be formed on the iines ot tbo Clydesdale Horse Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and that a provincial council be elected to adopt rules and constitution to suit local requirements. In speaking to his amendment, Mr Short said that at present no notice W;as taken of the certificates granted to blew Zealand horses in tho Argentine, and consequently the breeders there would not. import. This was a disgrace and decided that a i™ twenty-five members be elected, twelve from the North Island and twelve from the South Island, with a chairman and a temporary committee, consisting ot Messrs P J. King (Southland). G. Thomson (TaieriV, Jas. Gow jTaien), J. D. Wylie (Sefton), E. Short (Paorangi), W. GiUies (Manawatn), B. J. Dagg (Mastort<m),iand J. Hunter (Egmont), were elected to meet at an early date to draw up rules and regulations. , t
