THE EXHIBITION
QUICK DISMANTLING WOEK. The Exhibition buildings presented a busy scene yesterday. All day long the work of dismantling went on, and by five o’clock not a complete stall was left in tho buildings. The work of demolition is being carried out in record time, and iby to-night all the exhibits will have disappeared. Testerday was a, heavy day for the carrying firms of the city, all sorts of vehicles being employed from morning to night carting away cases of exhibits. • '■■■■:' ■ In addition to the packers and labourers employed by the stall holders, the Exhibition authorities have a large number of carpenters, and workmen employed restoring the Harbour Hoard’s "U” and sheds to their' normal ♦condition. The “J” shed has to bo handed over. on Friday, but the • Harbour Board has placed the "U" shed at the disposal of the Commissioners for three weeks for storage purposes. The annexe between the two sheds has to come down at once, as tho insurance period expires on Friday. Mr L. El Partridge, one of the Exhibition Commissioners, informed a "Times’’ representative yesterday that there has been very little pilfering. A few articles had gone astray, but their value was nominal in the aggregate. He expressed pleasure at tho quick demolition of the stalls. "It seems,’’ ho said, “that everybody is working _ against time. Practically nothing will bo left to-morrow. The annexe has got to come down at once and it will be a thing of tho past on Friday. AVe shall have a lot of material for sale. We have accepted an offer for one lot of chairs, and there have been numerous inquiries for the remainder, as well as for the timber, iron, etc. It will all be stored in the ‘U’ shed and sold privately, not by public auction, as we expect to realise better prices by disposing of it in this way."
