TRADES UNIONISM.

NEED FOE, ORGANISATION. Tho Opera House held a largo audience last evening to "hear Professor T. Mills, of the United States, speak on, “All the Unions Must Unite Altogether in the In-; terests of All.” Trades unionism, ho said, came into existence in order to deal ■with tho problems that arose between employers and employees. The first essential was that if they were going to effectively negotiate with anybody they must have effective representation of those they were speaking for. A great drawback to tho workers was lack of information. : It frequently happened that the people .were more interested in horseracing or other matters than things which were of the most serious importance to themselves. The speaker stressed the importance of propaganda work amongst trades unions. In New Zealand there were some sixty thousand members of unions and these should combine in one great organisation. The people should “get busy” in tho municipal government of their country, for that, was tho only way to bring down the rents and at the same time bring up the wages.
