M.P., auci Dr Cameron. FINANCE AND PROPERTY. The abattoir, milk supply and public health committee recommended and it "¥hat ie< as recommended by the city engineer the council invito applications for the position of an additional sanitary inspector, qualifications and salary to be the same as the sanitary inspectors at present in the service. , That the council authorise an extension of the tripe cleaning shed at the abattoir as recommended by tho city engineer. CITY RESERVES.
It was agreed on the recommendation of the baths and city reserves com mittee. That the council resume possession of the Town Belt sections at present leased to Jlr Breen, and that a notice ho served on all Town Belt lessees requiring them to within one month, clear their sections of' '~orso, broom, etc., and stating that if this is not done the council will resume possession of same. That the property owners in Boy street bo informed in accordance with the re port of the city engineers with respect to the alleged discharge of stormwater from thiVfscv.-towu Park on to their properties. The committee reported that they had received a letter from the society for the Protection of Women and Children with resnect to children frequenting the baths
without being under proper guardianship. The committee were forwarding a copy of the letter to the custodian of the baths with instructions for him to take steps to prevent children being in the baths too long at one time. The committee also reported that the superintendent of reserves had forwarded a list showing the number of trees supplied from the nursery on Arbor Day. BY-LAWS. The by-laws, five brigade and street lighting committee recommended:— That exemption be applied for the nar row portion of Adams terrace from the provisions of the Public Works Act, 190 S, subject to the condition that the building line is set back 30 feet from the cen. tre line of the street, as recommended by the city ngineer. _ , That the following taxi-cab stands be established in the city, as recommended by the city engineer;—Lambton . quay, fronting Government Buildings, 2; Whitmore street, 4; Ballance street, 2; Hotel Cecil, 2; Lambton quay, in front of Public Trust, 2; Stout street, 6; Brandon street, 4; Panama street, 4; Peatherston street, at Lambton qua}-, 8; Taranaki street, 4; Ghuznee street, east of Cuba street, 2; Ghuznee west of Cuba street, 2: total, 43. That tenders bo invited for the purchase of a horse hose reel, at the Central Fire Station, not now required. The recommendations were all adopted except the first clause, which was referred back to the committee. NOTICE OP MOTION. Councillor ■ Puller, in accordance with notice given, moved— That in future all reports, excepting those relating to the purchase of properties, be issued to all councillors and to the press simultaneously, and bo not marked or treated as " confidential.” The motion lapsed through lack of a seconder. Councillor Puller said that in future he would give out any reports, othei than those relating to properties, to the press. It was time they came to some better understanding on the question. ■ QUESTIONS. In reply to a question by Councilloi J. Trevor, the Acting-Mayor said the salaries of the staff would be considered at the next council meeting. Councillor Barber asked the Acting Mayor last night whether he was aware that the town clerk owned certain’ property in Adelaide road, on which the notice “ To Let ” was exhibited, and if so. whether ho would see that such property was fit for human habitation before being tenanted. "The Public Health Department will look after that,” was the reply. In reply to Councillor Shirtclifle, the Acting-Mayor said the work of erecting telegraph poles in Charlotte street by the City Council had been stopped by the Public Works Department because the footpath was being made 9 feet wide and the department required it to be 10 feet. The Order-in-Council authorising the work had not been signed, although the council had been given to understand that everything was in order. OTHER MATTERS. A special committee appointed to consider and report on the committee work of the council - brought down a scheme, considerably altering the present procedure. After a long debate it was decided not to alter the present arrangements. The city reserves committee reported that a letter had been received from the Northland Municipal Electors’ Association objecting to the erection of a stable at the Botanical Gardens. Councillor Cameron objected to tho work being carried out. ■lt w J as absurd to say there was no other available site. After a short discussion the letter was received. The tender of Briscoe and Co. for the supply , of cast-iron pipes and fittings was accejited. t
