ORPHANS' CLUB

RECEPTION TO LORD ISLINGTON. His Excellency the Governor o-n Saturday night visited the Orphans’ Club, which gave Lord Islington a very cordial reception. Tho Sydney street scuoolroom was/ tastefully decorated to mark the occasion. The guests included the Acting-Prune Minister (Sir James Carroll), Hon. T. Mackenzie, Archbishop Redwood, their Honors Bir Joshua Williams and Mr -justice Donnie ton. Major-General Godioy, the acting-Mayor (Mr Smith), and Colonel OoliliLa, C.iu.G. There was a large attendance of members and visitors. On his Excellency’s arrival the company sang "God Save the King, * and the Orphans sang a topical ode. The Chief Orphan (Dr Izard), welcomed Lord Islington, who made a happy, humourous reply. Very enjoyable selections. were played by a capable orchestra, under the conductors hip of Mr McComish. The programme was contributed to by Messrs Noton, Ceratty, Tingoy, Thompson, Borneo Gardiner, Gawthorpe, Clarkson, Fletcher, Bickanott, Keenan, Parker, Jacobs, Warren. Goudiu, Oirdlestone, and . Hutton. Mr Tingoy’s recitation of the ohardot scene from "Ben Hur," was a fine piece t>f dramatic work, and his impersonation of "Sherlock Holmes," with Messrs Girdlestone (Professor Moriarty), OarroU (Dr Watson), and Keenan (Messenger), completed a programme of unusual merit. Sir Joshua Williams, to whoso presence kindly reference was made by Dr Izard, and who was popularly received, recounted some interesting reminiscences of the early days of the Dominion. Mr Hollow was accompanist. To the Orphans’ executive, and their secretary (Mr Keenan) credit Is due for tho excellent evening’s entertainment they afforded their guests and members.
