MAKARA AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Makara County Council was hold yesterday, there being present Councillors G. Monk (in the chair), and F. T. Moore, S. Bryant, Eastwood, Haggerty. Hawkins. In consideration of their supplying the council with metal up to SCO yards at a reduction of 20 per cent, in price, Messrs Mace and Nicholson, contractors, wrote asking the council to enter into an agreement permitting them to run their waggon on the roads for a term of twentyone years.—lt was decided that the applicants be notified that they will be allowed to run on the roads under Ihc same arrangement as heretofore during the term of this council’s office.

An alleged nuisance caused by the drains and yard at the Porirua Hotel was mentioned.

Councillor Moore moved that tb° o‘oki Licensing Committee be informed that the council is astoni-hed that no action has yet been taken to aba*e or remedy the alleged nuisance complained of.—The motion was carried. The council arain considered the m"tter of the drainage of the .Tehm-nrviT" police station. It was ■ remarked th'* while the health inspector reported that a fiuisance existed at the police station and had made recommendation for its abatement, be bad negligently failed to notify the Police Department. It was thought that notice had been, given.

When he was questioned about the matter before the hospital and health committee ho' reported that notice had bee» served, but that it was being ignored.. The Commissioner of Police (Mr Waldegravo), however, wrote stating that he had never received' notice of the nuisance, so council gave him. snob notice, with the request that he would se? that tho nuisance was abated.

In regard to the reported blowing: up of a bridge in South Karori, Mr Denis MnlhaUe wrote stating that such was not the case. Pobablv the ties broke and the upright had carried away.—Tho letter was received.
