The President of Portugal, Senhor Theophrle Braga, was formerly president of the Acadaiuy of Sciences. He is known, in and out of Portugal as a man of great erud tion and command of language. His political ideals, which are as lofty and far-reaching as those of any contemporary statesman, hare made him one of the most esteemed men in his nalire laud. Every Portuguese knows Senhor Braga for a clean-handed politician. His patriotism is above suspicion, but some of his admirers have the idea that he is inclined to be visionary, and that he would lengthen his years of influence by curbing his head long enthusiasm. Senhor Braga is one of those statesmen whose philosophy- includes other countries than his own. Ho bas dreamed for years of a republican federation for the peninsula.
