EXCITING DUEL

BETWEEN FRENCH LAWYER AND JOURNALIST. An unusually severe duel was fought on a recent morning in Faris between M. ilaxeuce X-tgranu, a journalist, au<X M. liomanet tlu Caiuaun, a lawyer, in tne course of winch AX. Legrancl was wounded four times and his antagonist seven times. Tho reasons lor the duel have not bean made putuic, but it is known that there was a dispute between the comoatants, alter wn-ch they camo to blows. A duel was then decided upon, and in new of the serious nature of the alleged offence an arbitrator was appealed to in order to settle the conuitions. His-decision was that the duel was to be fought with swords, and was not to end until one or other combatant asked tor a cessation of tho fight. The encounter took place at 11 o'clock, and lasted through nine bouts. At tne end of the ninth bout each of the combatants had been cut severely in the forearm a number of times, M. Roraauet du Caillaud being touched ofteunr than his opponent. Botn men were willing to continue tho duel, but in view of their exhausted state the seconds decided, on their own authority, to put an end to the duel. The combatants refused to shake hands as they parted.
