GAMES ON SATURDAY. WELLINGTON DEFEAT UNITED. ERITOMB OP RESULTS. Wellington 1 United 0 Karori 8 Y.M.C.A 1 Victoria College 4 Wesley 0 Although the weather conditions did not augur too well on Saturday morning for hockey, still when the time for play arrived the rain. had. cleared off and players were able to enjoy their game, although the grounds were a trifle wet. Three senior games were well contested, and at times some really first-class hookey was witnessed. Karori still maintain their unbeaten record, and are loading for the championship, with Victoria College runners-up. KARORI v. Y.M.C.A. ' From the commencement of play it seemed as though the contest was to be a lively one, for both teams made the pace warm, Y.M.C.A. especially showing out. Karori were the first to visit the circle, and they were within a hair's breadth of scoring, when a ‘'scoop" stroke by G- Davies failed at the critical moment. Young Men rushed the hall along, but Karori's defence broke down, and a shot bv Loader went flying over the posts. ‘For a time give and take play occurred, the hall being rapidly hit from one side of the field to the other. Lewer on one occasion took the ball into the circle and scraped it between the uprights for Karori. By quick passing acrossfield Karori forwards kept their opponents' backs bysy, and in a fairly short space of time opportunities were made for Davies to score twice for Karori. Loader a little later again distinguished himself, but his shot again, flew over the posts when a score seemed inevitable. Lewer, Hall and Davies between them made an effort to change the scene of play, but Holmes broke up their attack, and give and take play followed. Loader and Barton were principally responsible for moving play gradually down towards the Karori goal. On ’four successive occasions 'Young Men had chances to score, but through weak play in the circle these went begging. G. Davies ran the length of the field, and a score from his shot seemed certain. The attempt, however, was smothered, and half time sounded. Shortly after the second spell had commenced G. Davies, who- was in a scoring humour, added the fourth goal. A little later Lewer succeeded in scoring another point for the blacks. This was succeeded by a smart piece of play on the part of Loader, .the opposing* left wing. He broke away from about the half way line, passed both half and fullback. but had to follow his own centre into the circle, having outpaced his forwards. His shot—a strong one—flew outside of the post. Weak play by Y.M.'s left half and full-back gavo Karori another advantage, resulting in G. Davies sending in a shot from a difficult angle which found the goal. Loader again run through the opposition, receiving the hall in the first instance from It. Barton (left half), but his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Hunter. Karori returned to the attack, and with a clean shot Lewer, their bully, scored. Y.M.’s retaliated with a straggling rush culminating in Robertson hitting their only goal. The light became bad, but before time was called Karori scored again, Lewer being suo-

cessful after a melee in front of the goal. Hr J. Pope' was referee. VICTORIA COLLEGE v. WESLEY. Shortly after the initial bully Colley© had their opponents busily engaged defending, and for a time Wesley succeeded in preventing a ©core. After a space Wesley took a turn at attacking, but were unsuccessful. A likely looking rush bv the Collegians took play within the circle, but through College being penalised Wesley were relieved for a time. College, however, pressed hard, and m a few moments Pitt, from the left wing, shot a goal. Half time sounded with the ©core: unchanged. * After the , spell College attacked, and within a fairly short space of time I'itt again ©cored. It was very seldom that Wesley appeared at all dangerous. College generally intercepting the ball. Con Straek next scored for College from a corner hit, and after another period of give and take play, G. Straek shot m and scored the final goal. Mr C. P. McKenzie.was referee. WELLINGTON, v. UNITED. This was the most Interesting game played at Day's Bay for some time past. Wellington showed themselves to be a vastly improved team. The only goal of, the game was scored in the first half by Dunn, who received a centre from Randle on the light-wing, and with a hard hit sent the ball flying into the net. Wellington had a few 7 other chances to score in both halves of the game, but through weak shooting and the good play of Dwyer, who gave a much better performance than previously this ; season, they were unable to do so. United, too, had chances to ©core, but through the forwards fumbling with the chances were lost. Just on the call of time United made one really strenons effort to score, and but for Morpeth being prepared the ball would undoubtedly have gone into th© net. United's forwards, with one or two exceptions, played without any combination. In the half-back line Thompson was at his best, and although Hickson played well as full-back, he was not up to his old standard. McEldowney, the left' full-back, was only fair, while Dwyer cam© out of his shell and played brilliantly in goal, hi© kicking being very noticeable.- Wellington's vanguard played a distinctly improved {fame ns regards .combination, but their shooting in the circle was weak. The mainstay of th© Wellington team was undoubtedly their three halves, Dobgon, Hall, an<i Pear, who all played well and gave their forwards plenty ,of chances, to Saudi© the ball. Hall, at centre half, was really a hard worker for- bis side, and indeed the success of his team is largely due to his play. ■ Morrah and Schladt, the Wellington full-backs, were only fair, while Morpeth,' in goal, was responsible for a good display. Mr J. Gendall was referee. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM TO PLAY . MANAWATU. At th© conclusion of the senior games on* Saturday, Mr H. V.
