BOXING.
BOXES v. WRESTLER. JACK JOHNSON" v. CLARENCE "WEBER. Seemingly there is a prospect of these two great exponents of different styles of attack and defence meeting in a ring to prove, not so ranch who is. tho better man, bnt which is tho better stylo. Mr E. F. Baker, who last yearsigned up Gotch and Hackeuschmidt to wrestle in Melbourne, says that Johnson, in reply to a cable from him, expresses his willingness to como to Melbourne and try conclusions with airy wrestler under tho conditions named. "Weber says all ho asks Johnson to do is to wear a loose jacket open at the neck, one that would not impede his movements in any way. Articles of agreement havo been sent to America for Johnson's signature. It is said the match will take place about the end of the year. The purso mentioned is £SOOO. Tho Wanganui Boxing Association went to a lot of trouble in arranging tho Burns v. Murphy fight, and tho executive were much disappointed at tho fiasco. There can be no shadow of excuse tor Murphy for using unfair methods. Ho was twice warned by tho referee, and he was appealed to by his opponent. In disqualifying Murphy, Dr Napier McLean acted with absolute fairness, and no other decision was possible. What little fighting there was in the one completed round, and there was hardly a solid punch struck, seemed to go in favour of Burns. The tournament was well managed, although some of tho exhibition spars were rather too mild for tho spectators. The association ■will make a profit of about .£lO out of tho affair.
