THEFT OF ARSENIC

A PECULIAR CASE. William Lawronco, an old man. was charged before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, with having, on May 25th, stolen a bottle of arsenic,, valued at Is, tho property of Arthur Aubrey Mec. Ho pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Sheehan stated that about 6.5 p.m. on the date in question, accused went into the complainant’s shop and took away a bottle of arsenic; Ho returned shortly after and brought the bottle ba-ck. The matter, in tbo meantime, had been reported to the police, and a constable found tho accused with the bottle. He was taken to the police station, where lie admitted having- taken tho arsenic, and stated that ho had hidden it. Accused had, on more than one occasion, threatened to commit suicide. Ho was a good worker, ;but was a man of ungovernable temper. Beyond this offence nothing was known against him. His Worship said ho could not understand jvhy the accused had taken a bottle of arsenic. It was a most unusual thing for a person to steal, but tho accused probably knew why ho took it. He was liable to a term of imprisonment for such an offence. Ho would bo convicted and ordered to come np for sentence when called upon, his Worship warning tho accused fo be more careful in tho future.
