BRISBANE GAS TROUBLE

A portion of tho city was last night thrown into darkness owing to tho inexperienced stokers engaged /being unable to maintain a proper supply of gas. GOVERN! LENT ASKED TO INTERVENE. A CRITICAL SITUATION. (Received May 27, 0.10 a.m.) BRISBANE, May 26. The gasworks strike has reached an acute stage, owing to the failure of supply. Thousands of hands employed in factories and other establishments relying on ga9 for power are unable to resume work. Tho Coal Workers and Lighters* Union has agreed not to carry coal for the gas works. A trade union deputation asked tho Premier to intervene. Mr Denham replied that there was no cause to intervene. The company had done nothing contrary to law. He would, however, do his utmost to bring about a eonferenco and would appoint an arbitrator if both tides were agreeable.
