The Rakanoa is to leave Westport at 8 o'ctock tats morning for Wellington, with a cargo of coal lor tne Westport Coal Company ana the Union Company. The Union Company’s tug Terawhiti, which has been undergoing an overhaul, has resumed work. Captain Ricketts, oi the company's shore staff, is acting-master, as Captain J. W. F. Holmes, who has been severely indisposed, will not be able to resume command lor another week. Mr James Luke, second officer of the Ulimaroa, who has been on holiday leave, has rejoined his vessel. Mr Hunter, who ■ has been acting third, has gone on holiday. Mr Fred Stone, chief steward of the Ulimaroa. has, rejoined his vessel after holiday leave. Mr J. The auxiliary schooner Unia arrived at Wellington yesterday, at midday from Tekopum, Kaipara. She berthed at the Clyde quay wharf to discharge 30,000 ft of kauri, and is expected to sail to-day for Lyttelton with remainder of cargo. STAB OP AUSTRALIA. The Tyser liner Star of Australia arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from New York via Australia and Auckland, anu berthed at No. 6, Queen’s wharf, where she is discharging about 10C0 tons of cargo. Parson is second. The vessel is expected to leave here on Monday for Lyttelton and Dunedin with remainder of cargo, WARNING TO YACHTS. Representations have been made to the Marino Department that sailing yachts in Wellington harbour frequently do not complv with tho “Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea,” and the “Harbour Regulations.” It is stated that they frequently cross the bows of steamers that aro coming in and going out of the port, and that in some cases collisions have nearly been caused by this practice. Should this practice continue tho department proposes to institute proceedings ’ against persons who commit breaches of the regulations. WAKANUI*S ALARMING EXPERIENCE. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Wakanui, which reached Melbourne from Canada last week, brought about SCOO tons of cargo, about 2000 tons of which was for Melbourne. Bho goes to Sydney, and then comes on to Now Zealand. The Wakanui experienced some remarkable weather during her voyage from St. John, Canada, to Melbourne. The day after leaving St. John the vessel ran into a furious .storm, mountainous seas washed her decks from stem to stern, and ••several awning spars were carried away, Tho forward watchtower was badly damaged, ana everything that was not securely lashed was swept - overboard. The following day another gale raged with greater fury, and seas threatened at times to engulf her. The ship laboured violently, pitching and straining in a most alarming manner. One big sea smashed the forward bridge, and another damaged the side-lights. Several members of the crew had narrow escapes, but, with the exception of tho ship’s carpenter, who wits temporarily disabled, they were all able to continue their duties. The gale lasted four days. After rounding tho Capo of Good Hope exceptionally foggy weather was experienced, the sun being totally obscured for six days.

STAR OF CANADA. The Star of Canada (from London) left Napior at 11.30 a.m. yesterday for Wellington ■with remainder of cargo. She is to berth at No. 2, King's whan, and is to sail on Monday for Brisbane. OTAKI AT DUNEDIN. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s Liner Otaki, which arrived at Pore Chalmers on Tuesday' from London, had. an uneventful passage. A gale in the English Channel was followed by moderate to fino weather till south of the Great Australian Light, when a moderate easterly gale was encountered for twenty-four hours. Fine weather then set in till arrival. Captain* Silba has the following'officers:—Mr F. P. Crawford, chief; Mr W. Field-Hook, second; Mr JK. P. Mel&ome, third; Mr C. N. Sayce, fourth; .Dr Lindsay, surgeon; Mr G. Wehausen, chief engineer; and Messrs A. White, W. Thompson, 0. G. Richardson, J. Robertson, and J. W. Thompson, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively; Messrs C. M. Keenan and F. P. Maynard first and second -• refrigerating ’engineers. -Messrs C. S. Fox and A. Newt-on are the midshipmen, and Mr Good is steward-in-charge, The vessel brought a total cargo of 6272 tons, and of this 3336 tons general and 50 tons of explosives are for Dunedin, 621 tons for Lyttelton, and-2295 tons for Bluff. CLYDE FROM CHATHAMS. Yesterday the schooner Clyde berthed at the Railway wharf to load about 50 tons oi coal, and some stores for Mr J. McLean's blue-cod fishing settlement at Kaingaroa, Chatham Islands. The vessel arrived in the stream on the previous night alter a rough passage from the* Chatha-ms. The schooner ran into a gale of cyclonic force, and was hove-to for several hours. The little vessel showed her excellent seagoing qualities by coming through without damage. TURAKINA AT HOBART. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Turakina arrived at Hobart at 9 a.m. yesterday from London v and Plymouth via Capetown. The vessel is row expected to arrive here next Wednesday morning. THE HINEMOA The Government steamer Hinemoa returned to Wellington at 1 p.m; yesterday from Cook Strait lighthouses. The sea was too rough for the vessel to recharge the gas reservoirs at the Jackson Head beacon, and at the Cape Palliser lighthouse it was also impossible, to work. If the weather is favourable to-day the Hinemoa will revisit the two places which she was unable to work. MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY. I ~ A magisterial Inquiry is to be held, on a date yet to be fixed, concerning the recent collision in the Manawatu river between the steamers Himitangl and Wairau.
