FIXTURES June 2. 3.—Dunedin J. 0. "Winter. Jvme 3. 5. 7.—Auckland It. C. Winter Juno 3 and 5.—-Otaki Maori R.C. Winter. Juno 21 and 22.—Hawke's Bay J.C. Winter. Juno 23 and 29.—Napier Park K.C. Winter. July 6 and 7.—Gisborne ii-C- Winter. NOTES AST* COMMENTS (By "Th.o Judge/*) Culprit, who lias headed the list of winning two-year-olds' for the season won in stakes and just failed by X'OG to equal Multi form's record. No two* yoar-oid filly has ever won so muck money before. White Cockade has been fencing in hi.s best form at 3‘iccarton, showing plenty of pace and clearing the obstacles very cleanly. J. Hegarty, who piloted Corona in hi* s engagements at Wanganui, is the ■'veukuown champion amateur lightweight boxer. Peireno was scconA on the list of winning two-year-olds for the season, with *£1570 to her credit. She is a fine advertisement for her sire, Achilles, and tllio Waikanao stud. Mr S. H. Colian won the Apprentices’ Handicap Plato at Newmarket (Png.) on April -ifch with Bessie Burke, a daughter of tho Sydney-bred Australian Star. Malt King, tho mile champion of Australia, cost dlOgs as a yearling. Ho has won sonic AoOtlt) in stakes. At the same sale of yearlings Calvcrite realised 2loogs and failed to win. Such is tho luck of the game.

Tho English Derby will be rim for at Epsom next Wednesday. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference will be hold in tho Town Hall, Wei liny-ion, on Tuesday, July 15th, at 10.30 a.iu., not on Juno 24th and 2Gth, as previously .announced. The time for receiving notices of motion has boon extended to Saturday, J uno 10th. Entries for tho Gisborne U.C.’s steeplechase meeting are- duo next Wednesday. Tho G.J.C. Grand National meeting will take place on August Bth, 10th and Utii. lent ms for the big events close on June 23rd. Tho winter meeting of tho Dunedin Jockey Club will be hold on June 2nd and 3rd. Acceptance.for-the first day are duo this evening. - Acceptances for the first day’s events of tho Otaki Maori XI.C/s winter njpeting close with Mr 0. J. D’Ath, the secretary, at 8.30 p.m. on Monday. Aa tho handicaps appear to have been well thought out the withdrawals should bo but few. M> W. D. Watson, a popular Masterlon sportsman, and owner of First Consul, is on a brief visit to Wellington. Ho states that the son of Conqueror is to fulfil his Otaki engagements. L. Traill, the .successful Porirua lightweight, steered Mr J. Buckley’s Wedge to victory in the Railway Handicap at the Nortn Otago meeting on Wednesday last. R. Hatch was associated with Obsono’ssuccess in. the Stewards’ Handicap at Oama.ru. ' “Holey” and tho chestnut horse appear to be a hot combination. The St, Ambrose—Flame fitly Mumura paid the largest dividend on tho opening day of the North Otago Jockey Club’s meeting. Followers of D. Roberts* stable are reported to have thrown in for a good win. Stayboy returned bis supporters a very acceptable dividend when ho won tho Empire Hurdles at Oamarn. The gelding was turned out in capital condition by J. McCombe. ’ The Conqueror mare Emma continues to get through some satisfactory work at tho Lower Hutt. She will bo a competitor on the second day of the Otald meeting. The Levin trainer Fred Garment's team for the Otaki meeting will consist of Tootane, Thetis, Sir Frisco, Paxewanui, St. Bees, Aurora, Rapids, Eureka, Brown Trout and Boyno Water. With such a team surely some of the stake money vvjll be secured by the Levin stable.

Owing to the accommodation for boxes at the Otaki meeting being engaged weeks ago, F. Carmont will be obliged to rail his team from Levin to Otaki on' each day of the meeting. Eureka, the full brother to Brown Trout, who is to make his debut at the Otaki meeting, is said to be a good sort who should pay his way. NOTES ON THE WANGANUI MEETING Mr Sander’s gelding Hydrant, who ran fourth, in the Century Hurdles on Wednesday, won tho race for Mr H. Brown in 1936. The sou of Jet d’Eau is beginning to get well up in years. One of the features of the recent Wanganui'meeting was tho excellence of the starting. On the conclifeion of tho meeting Mr Skipwith was invited into tho stewards* room and warmly congratulated on his good work. Aruake, who won the Farewell Hack Handicap, is a rather nice stamp of racer. He is a four-year-old chestnut gelding by Chasseur from Mnb and has an undeniable turn of speed, but is a slow beginner. W. Rayner had the gelding in great condition-. Gold Circle would have been all tho better for a gallop or two. Mr Donnelly’s colt was mad© a hot favourite for the Electric Hack Handicap but, after running last most, of tho way, could get no nearer than eighth. In " the Farewell Hack Flat the son erf Gold Rootf was a#ain badly away, )>nt finished at a great pac© lu third place. The first gallop did hima Jot of good. .A special feature of the meeting a.fc Wanganui is the Garrison Baud, and at the fixture just concluded it was a real pleasure to listen, to.tho music, which -was woM selected and excellently renderedMost of the bands which do duty on racecourses would be better absent, and it is a welcome change to hear tho class of music supplied by Mr Wade’s men. It was hard luck for Mr E. J. Watt that Wimmera should have gone amiss on tho very eve of the Wanganui - meeting, for tho goldin-g was in great heart. Whether he could liavo beateii Appin at a difference of 401 bis highly problematical., Certainly hc\ won . the race last year in 2scc faster time, but on that occasion lie had a greatly reduced poundage in the saddle.

Tho Cuirassier gelding John will have to show considerable improvement before ho will do much good as a hurdler. To go t for tho Century Hurdles was perhaps flying at rather high game for a commencement, and it may be that if ho can be schooled to jump quicker, instead of dwelling at his fences, ho may win in moderate company. Zaate., a six-year-old gelding by Euroclydon from Puss, looks like turning out useful later on. Tho day.before the Wanganui meeting ho sligiitlv wrenched himself and this may have partly accounted for his early fall in the Grandstand Steeplechase. Tho gelding was a bit larno afterwards and will probably need a spall. lie is a bold jumper and is endowed wi:;h plenty of pace. Strategist looked well to tbs eye, but ho failed to gob a place in either race lie started in. la the Purua Hack Plat he was not much fancied and did not appear to be too well handled in the early stages. In the Balgownie Hack Handicap Hie Nelson gelding was second favourite and ha ran much better, but failed to quito sod the journey out. H’Nil hardly looked ready although lie ran a fair race in th« Bata Hurdles and

might have been closer bad bis rider been a bit more vigorous. When properly wound up the Crackshot gelding should bo getting among tho winners in the near future. . A.K.C.
