WANGANUI RACES

FINE DAY’S SPOUT BIG STEEPLECHASE WON BY CORAZON APPIN WINS HURDLES PBESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, May 21. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter mooting opened to-day in beautiful weather. Tho coarse was in good going order. There was a largo attendance of the public. The racing was most interesting all through, and tho finishes in most events very close and exciting. The Wanganui Steeplechase was a splendid race, and the victory of Sir William Bussell's candidate Gorazon was greeted with vociferous applause. The victory of Morrivonia in the Connolly Handicap was unexpected, and the Merriweo mure paid a good dividend. The sura of £16,024 was put through the totalisators during the day, as against J810.9C6 on tile corresponding day last year. Details: — BOKOUGII HANDICAP, Of 1.50 so vs; six furlongs. 1— Hon. J. I). NOTES ON THE RACING (By '"The Juffg©.") Racing wets commenced, with, tho Borough Handicap. J lackers commenced well by going strongly for tho Hon. J« I). Ormond's geldmg Fauiius, who certainly looked well, while the good deeds of St. Toney earned him plenty of support. Air Skipwith hod some trouble with the horses, ultimately sending them oil on very even terms, but Simplex began very slowly and lost several lengthsTo Kahunmgi dashed away, with Mon Ami next, but soon St. Toney went into second, place, with Faun us next. Ah they swung round tho homo bend St. Toney was just showing the way to Faunas, but once straightened for home the latter cam© away and won fairly comfortably by a length from Mon Ami, who finished with a great rattle. Tumut wa-s a gcod third, with Nyland, St. Toney, and Vibration bunched. The winner had done a great gallop the day before and ran up to it. Mon Ami shoved much more dash in tho finish than in her recent efforts. St. Toney stopped vary suddenly at the end, and was probably short of a gallop. FAST TIME IN THE STEEPLECHASE. Attention was then focussed on the candidates for the big steeplechase. Nearly everything found admirers. Lovell never looked bettor, and he was sent out favourite. Collelo sent Corazon to the post fit as hands could make him, and a lot of money went on him. At the last minute Julian was substituted for W. Young on Te Arai, but the gelding was not a great deal fancied, although ho looked well. The race was a particularly interesting on© throughout, ami the finish a great one. Lovell made the running virtually th© whole way to the straight, with Winchester and Eldorado as his nearest attendants. Corona lost Ids rider at the second jump, but Heggarty was soon in tho saddle again. A mile from home th© race looked bo rest between Lovell, Winchester, Eldorado, and Corazon, and at this stage Winchester was going so strongly that he looked like pulling it off. Two jumps from homo lie came down, and this 1-eft Eldorado and Lovell at the head of affairs, with Corazon in hot pursuit, Eldorado and Corazon rose at the Inst jump together, and in a punishing finish Sir William Russell's geiding won by a long neck, amid a scene of great excitement. Mount Cook finished well over tho last mile, getting to within two lengths of Eldorado, while a hundred vards back came tho tired out Lovell. Eurus was fifth, Mahara sixth, Castout seventh. Te Aral (who was never once prominent) eighth. Corona being last to finish. Loch Fyno, who had never been able to pace it with the others, fell at th© last jump. That Lovell mad© 'the pace a cracker is shown from the time, 6min 3sec, which beats tho record for the race of Gmin 4 1-5 put up by TUson in 1908. Corazon was bred by Sir William Russell in 1903, being by Coeur d© Lion from Rasulka, by Vasco di-Garaa:—Lore-lei, by Leolinus. Corazon has before now given evidence of jumping and staying ability. Eldorado ran a capital race, and he is evidently about in his best; form. Tho distance was too far for l/ovell, while the Great Northern candidates, To Aral and Fyne, ran wretchedly, the latter especially so. FAVOURITE BEATEN. Gold Circle was a red hot favourite for the Electric Hack Handicap, but locked short of work, and after running last for a bit eighth place was the best he could do. Taft showed tho way for three _ furlongs from Lady Kilcheran and Ivina, but then the Kilcheran filly rushed £ast, and won easily by two lengths from Kina. Gaby was a oloso third, followed by Aruake, Voca and Amaru. Tho winner showed a lot of pace, but having earned something of a name for unreliability was allowed to pay a good dividend. Ward, on Tarmakou, was jerked out of the saddle, and had Quito a long ride hanging to th© horse's neck. Gaby finished well, but would have been better suited by a longer journey.'

A JOCKEY DISQUALIFIED. The Ka.itoko Hack Hurdles was chiefly remarkable for a rather sensational finish. Burton led off from Zante and Patrobus, with Nupper well back. : Half a mile from home Zante was going so well in front that ho looked like .winning, but in the straight Patrobus headed him. "A hundred yards from homo Nappor suddenly clapped on steam, and, finishing at a great pace, passed Zante three strides from home, and in another two strides would have- beaten Patrobus. Had Julian sent Nappcr along sooner he must have won instead of being beaten by a short length. Mallet was fourth, Rapids fifth and Burton sixth. The stewards held an inquiry into Julian’s riding of Napper, and as a result. disqualified the jockey for twelve months for the careless handling of his mount. GREAT FINISH IN THE CENT™.” ' HURDLES. The Century Hurdles proved just as exciting a finish as the big steeplechase, and, curiously enough, the winner was in each ease ridden by J. Hcroook, who thus pulled off the double. Marten, on the strength of his Feilding running, was made a better favourite than Waiputore, but the connections of tho latter were very confident. The Officer marc was in front practically tho whole way, while Auratus, Appin and Hydrant were never far away! When the pace was cracked on for tho final flutter Waiputere and Appin settled down to a great battle, and at tho last hurdle Waiputoro seemed to have the advantage. Appin finished very gamely, getting home 'by a head, with Auratus two lengths away. Hydrant was fourth, Jlarton fifth, Lethean sixth and Torbelle a bad last. Appin, who won recently at Hastings, was allowed to pay a false price. At the same time had Auratus been quite himself it looked as though he would have had the finish to himself. Wimmera, unfortunately, went sore over night, and was, of course, withdrawn. - Tho winner was bred by Mr L. do Pelichet in 1305, and was got by The Possible from _ Miss Beckwith, by Captain Webb—Princess Helen, by Leolinns. Ho is very fit just now. A SURPRISE IN THE CONNOLLY. The Connolly Handicap resulted in an easy victory for Merrivonia, with Oliver in tho saddle. Backers must surely have forgotten tho mare’s goed deeds this season to have allowed her to pay the price she did. There was a nice field of fourteen, and Cheddar being most fancied. Following their usual tactics, Bliss and Vi rushed away iu tho lead, and they made the pace very willing for a mile, with Merrivonia and Cheddar always within striking distance. Merrivonia and Bliss were tho first to head for homo, but then the former came awav and won very easily by over two lengthfrom Gunboat, who was brought up in the last bit with, a fine run by Gray. Bliss (ailed in the last bit and was two lengths of! third, followed by Vi, Cheddar, Goodwin Park, and Iranui. Mr Ames was very confident his mare would win, but the public left her alone, the result being tho bigg&st dividend of tho day. Gunboat was badly placed in the early stages, or might have done better. Muiga Bill

ran disappointingly. It would seem that Cheddar is not so good as was supposed. THE LAST RACE. Tho light was bad fur the Puma Hack Flat, and. the held of thirteen proved particularly troublesome at the pest, but an excellent dispatch was at last effected. Melaiogue dashed away in front, with Ladromo next ,aud Silver Bullet third, and the loaders' imsations were unchanged to tho homo bond, when Silver Bullet wont up to tho leader and in a good finish beat her homo by a length, with Floater finishing strongly on tho rails a similar distance back. The winner—who captured a race on the second day at Treutham —was a hot favourite, and Hector GiViy rod© a nice race on him. Afctffekl had Melalc Sue looking well, and she ran a fine race, but wavs outpaced iu the last fifty yards. Old Maid behaved badly at tho start, and was badly left, while Strategist’s exhibition was much below Hawera form.
